What is Right Renal Calculus?

Kidney stones or renal calculus are hard mineral deposits that can form in either kidney. As the name suggests, right renal calculus refers to stones that form in the right kidney. These stones can vary in size and shape and may feature different compositions. These renal calculi can cause significant discomfort and pain, and while there’s a chance they can flush out of the system on their own, they may sometimes require a doctor’s intervention for removal. Based on their composition, right renal calculus can be bifurcated into the following types:

Causes of Right Renal Calculus

The treatment for right renal calculus depends mainly on the type of stones you have, and the treatment options may range from conservative methods, such as medication and therapy, to non-conservative methods, including surgical removal. Right renal calculus can form due to a variety of reasons. The cause typically determines the composition of the stones, in addition to their size and number. Listed below are some common causes of right renal calculus:

  • Lack of hydration: If the body lacks enough hydration, there’s a chance that the urine will become concentrated. This concentrated urine contains minerals that can lead to stone formation. :
  • Having an unhealthy diet: Diet is another factor that contributes to the formation of right renal calculus. A diet high in protein, sodium, and sugar and low in fiber can increase the chances of kidney stone formation.
  • Medications: Some medications, such as diuretics, can increase the risk of kidney stone formation.
  • Lifestyle factors: Individuals with a sedentary lifestyle and professions involving prolonged sitting hours are at an increased risk of kidney stone formation.
  • Family history: Patients with a family history of kidney stones are also at an increased risk of developing them at some point in their lives.
  • Medical conditions: Some medical conditions, such as gout, hyperparathyroidism, and urinary tract infections, can also increase the risk of right renal calculus.

Are you going through any of these symptoms?

Symptoms of Right Renal Calculus

Right renal calculus can exhibit a range of symptoms, ranging from mild to severe. Some common symptoms of right renal calculus are as follows:

  • Intense pain in the side or back is a common symptom of right renal calculus. The severity of pain can differ from person to person based on how serious the condition is.
  • Reduced urine production and difficulty in passing urine can also occur if the patient has right renal calculus. Some individuals also complain of pink, red, or brown blood in their urine.
  • Nausea and vomiting can also occur in patients with right renal calculus, along with fever and chills.

It is important for patients to seek medical attention if they experience the symptoms of right renal calculus. Your healthcare provider will perform tests to diagnose the condition and recommend appropriate treatment. Recognizing the symptoms on time can help you prevent potential complications.

How Is Right Renal Calculus Diagnosed?

To get a diagnosis for right renal calculus, you have to see an experienced urologist. They will perform a physical assessment and will ask you various questions about the symptoms you’re experiencing, medical history, etc. They may look for swelling in the lower back or flank area that can be indicative of renal calculus. If they suspect right renal stones in the physical assessment, they may suggest the following tests to confirm the diagnosis:

  • Imaging tests: Imaging tests like X-rays, CT scans, and ultrasounds can confirm the presence or presence of a kidney stone. They can also be beneficial in determining the number of stones and their size.
  • Urine tests: A urine test can help look for infection in the urine, which may be an indication of kidney stones.
  • Blood tests: Blood tests can help look for infections that may have caused kidney stones to form.
  • Analysis of the stone: In this test, a stone passed by the patient is analyzed in a lab to study its composition, which can help identify the underlying cause and guide treatment.

The doctors may also perform other tests based on the specifics of your case.

Treatment Options for Right Renal Calculus

Right renal calculus can be treated through a variety of methods, depending on how serious the condition is. In less severe cases, conservative treatments work just fine. But, if the condition is severe, or the doctor suspects other complexities, non-surgical procedures or surgery may become requisite. Defined below are the different treatment options for right renal calculus:

NON-SURGICAL TREATMENT

  • Medication: Medicines are generally suggested to relieve pain caused by stones. Treatment through medicines is also considered the first line of treatment. The doctor may suggest ibuprofen or acetaminophen to manage pain and help make the symptoms less severe.
  • Alpha Blockers:  Alpha-blockers are suggested to help relax the muscles and let the stones pass easily through the system.
  • Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL): This is a non-surgical method of kidney stone removal that involves breaking the stones with the help of shock waves and allowing the fragments to pass through the urine. This procedure does not involve any cuts or stitches and takes only 40 to 45 minutes. The patient can return home on the same day.

SURGICAL TREATMENT

  • Ureteroscopic Lithotripsy or URSL:  This is a surgical procedure for the extraction of right renal calculus. It is suggested if the patient has small to medium-sized stones that aren’t responding to other, less invasive treatments. It involves using a fiber-optic ureteroscope for the removal of the stone. The stone is located with X-ray guidance and then collected in a stone basket before removal. In some cases, the stones are fragmented with a laser, which makes extraction easier. Ureteral stents are placed after the procedure.
  • Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy or PCNL: This procedure is commonly known as ‘tunnel surgery’. This is a minimally-invasive right renal calculus removal procedure that involves making a small incision in the flank area to access the stones and inserting a nephroscope with X-ray guidance to determine the exact location of the stones. The stones are then extracted with the help of microforceps or broken down with a laser A drainage catheter, and double-J (DJ) stents are placed after the extraction of stones.
  • Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery (RIRS): A RIRS is also minimally-invasive and is performed with an optic endoscope. The procedure involves using an endoscope to reach the urine-collecting part of the kidneys through the urethra while looking at the organs with an X-ray for precision. Once the stone is located, it is fragmented with the help of a laser probe, and the broken pieces are collected in a stone basket and removed via the same route. A DJ stent is placed after the surgery, which is removed within a week.

Recovery After Right Renal Calculus Treatment

The total duration of recovery after right renal calculus treatment is bound to vary from patient to patient based on several factors, including the severity of the condition, the type of treatment offered, and the individual’s overall health. For some, complete recovery can take only a few days. But, in some other cases, recovery can take up to several weeks to a month.

Typically, for patients who have had ESWL for right renal calculus removal, recovery can take 1 to 2 days. After a URSL procedure, total recovery can take up to 4 to 7 days. In the case of PCNL, the recovery time is slightly longer and may range from 2 to 4 weeks. If you have had RIRS, you may have to wait 7 to 10 days to recover fully.

The doctors generally give various instructions to the patients at the time of discharge concerning the recovery period. This may include things a patient can do to speed up recovery and prevent complications that may delay healing and prevent timely recovery. This may include various lifestyle modifications and other standard guidelines. At Pristyn Care, we ensure 20 percent faster recovery compared to other surgical providers after right renal calculus treatment. To get effective treatment and a hassle-free recovery, consult with our expert urologists today.

FAQs on Right Renal Calculus Treatment

How serious is right renal calculus?

The seriousness of right renal calculus may vary from person to person. In some cases, the stones don’t cause serious complications and pass through the system seamlessly on their own. If the stones are too big or too many in number or are lodged in the ureters, they may lead to serious complications. Therefore, if you suspect you may have kidney stones, reach out to your healthcare provider to get timely treatment.

When should I be worried about right renal calculus?

Yes. While treatment for right renal calculus helps remove the existing stones, it can not prevent new stones from forming. But you can always ask your doctor for tips on kidney stone prevention.

Does right renal calculus always require treatment?

No. In less severe cases, right renal calculus can pass through the system on its own, and treatment isn’t necessary. But, severe cases necessitate medical intervention.

Is right renal calculus different from kidney stones?

No. Right renal calculus is basically kidney stones that form in the right kidney. Both terms mean the same.

How can I prevent right renal calculus?

Here are a couple of things you can do to prevent the right renal calculus from forming again:

  • Limit your consumption of oxalate-rich foods
  • Reduce your intake of animal protein

Kidney stones usually do not cause discomfort and pass on their own or with the right treatment. But, sometimes, this condition can lead to stone-related infections, which can lead to complications such as kidney damage or complete renal failure that can be life-threatening.

Can I treat right renal calculus with home remedies?

Yes. Some home remedies, such as drinking lots of water, can help the stones pass through the system without any hassles. However, it is also advisable to seek medical attention if you suspect you may have right renal calculus.

What questions do I need to ask the urologist before my treatment?

You must ask the urologist some important questions before your kidney stone treatment, such as:

  • Which is the best treatment option for me?
  • How invasive will the treatment be?
  • How soon will I recover after treatment?
  • What complications can occur without treatment?
  • How can I prevent kidney stones from occurring in future?
  • Will the treatment require a hospital stay?
  • How do I prepare for my right calculus treatment?
  • How soon will I recover after my treatment?
