Advanced Treatment for 22 mm Kidney Stone

Kidney stones are hardened mineral and salt deposits that are formed from excess crystal-forming substances like uric acid, oxalates, calcium, etc., in the urine, as opposed to diluting liquids. Kidney stones can vary in size from 0.5 mm to 40 mm. They are a progressive issue, i.e., they increase in size over time, and as they develop, the chances of permanent kidney damage increase. Kidney stones that are smaller than 4-5 mm pass on their own and do not require any treatment, while kidney stones that are a little bigger can be dissolved over time through proper medications and lifestyle, however large kidney stones, like 22 mm renal stones, need surgical treatment to prevent irreversible damage to the kidneys. You can seek expert kidney stone treatment at Pristyn Care clinics and associated hospitals from experienced urologists for long-term relief from kidney stone pain and recurrence.

Kidney Stone Diagnosis & Treatment

Diagnosis

If you have symptoms of a kidney stone, your urologist may perform the following diagnostic tests to confirm the presence of kidney stones and draft a treatment plan:

  • Blood and urine tests: Blood tests help assess the calcium and uric acid levels in the blood, which helps evaluate the health of the kidneys. A 24-hour urine collection test examines the components of the urine for stone-forming minerals and stone-preventing substances.
  • Imaging tests: Imaging tests like CT scans, abdominal X-rays, and ultrasounds help reveal the size and location of kidney stones.
  • Stone analysis: Often, large kidney stones are associated with small kidney stones. If you collect your urine and pass it through a strainer, you can obtain small renal stones and send them to the lab for analysis.

Surgery

For a kidney stone, you may need one of the following treatments:

  • ESWL (Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy) is a common noninvasive treatment in which shock waves like X-rays or ultrasounds are used to break down stones in the urinary system, pancreas, or bile ducts.
  • RIRS (Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery) is an endoscopic surgery in which the surgeon uses a fiberoptic endoscope and a ureteroscope to locate and remove renal stones from kidneys or ureters.
  • Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is performed to remove kidney or upper ureter stones that are too large to be dissolved through ESWL or URSL.
  • In Ureteroscopic lithotripsy (URSL), the surgeon inserts a ureteroscope through the urethra to locate the stones, and then the stones are destroyed using shock waves. A urethral stent may be placed at the end of the surgery to keep the ureter open after the procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can kidney stones be prevented?

Yes, kidney stones can be prevented if people follow a healthy diet and lifestyle since they usually occur due to poor diet and lifestyle, among people who don’t drink enough water, have chronic diarrhea, high blood sugar, or have a family history of kidney stone issues.

Will a 22 mm kidney stone cause me pain?

Yes. Large kidney stones, like a 22 mm kidney stone, can cause sharp pain in the back and side, painful urination, kidney damage, etc. Generally, only kidney stones smaller than 6 mm in size can be asymptomatic.

Can kidney stones be permanently treated?

While surgical treatments like lithotripsy, nephrolithotomy, etc., are very effective in dissolving the existing kidney stones, they cannot permanently eliminate the condition. The only way to prevent the recurrence of kidney stones is by following a healthy lifestyle and diet.

Which treatment will be best for dissolving a 22 mm kidney stone?

The best course of treatment for dissolution of a 22 mm kidney stone differs for every patient, depending on factors like location of the stone, its size, composition, etc. Generally, the most preferred way to treat 20-40 mm kidney stones is through a staged URSL surgery.

Is kidney stone treatment covered under insurance?

Yes, since kidney stone treatment is medically necessary for the patient, it is covered under most insurance policies. If you have any doubts, our dedicated insurance team can provide you with clarity regarding the same in the future.
