Advanced Treatment for 6.5 mm Kidney Stone

Kidney stones are pebble-like masses that form when the minerals and salts present in the urine start to crystallize in the kidneys. Typically, when a kidney stone is smaller than 5 mm, it can pass through the urinary tract and get expelled naturally from the body. However, the stones can grow in size over time. Once the stone grows larger than 6 mm in size, it becomes slightly problematic to pass them. If you have been diagnosed with a 6.5 mm kidney stone and wish to get proper treatment, get in touch with Pristyn Care. We have expert urologists who are well-trained in all types of surgical and non-surgical procedures for kidney stone treatment. You can book a free consultation with our urology specialists and discuss your treatment options.

Kidney Stone Diagnosis & Treatment

Diagnosis

If you have symptoms of a kidney stone, your urologist may perform the following diagnostic tests to confirm the presence of kidney stones and draft a treatment plan:

  • Blood and urine tests: Blood tests help assess the calcium and uric acid levels in the blood, which helps evaluate the health of the kidneys. A 24-hour urine collection test examines the components of the urine for stone-forming minerals and stone-preventing substances.
  • Imaging tests: Imaging tests like CT scans, abdominal X-rays, and ultrasounds help reveal the size and location of kidney stones.
  • Stone analysis: Often, large kidney stones are associated with small kidney stones. If you collect your urine and pass it through a strainer, you can obtain small renal stones and send them to the lab for analysis.

Surgery

For a kidney stone, you may need one of the following treatments:

  • ESWL (Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy) is a common noninvasive treatment in which shock waves like X-rays or ultrasounds are used to break down stones in the urinary system, pancreas, or bile ducts.
  • RIRS (Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery) is an endoscopic surgery in which the surgeon uses a fiberoptic endoscope and a ureteroscope to locate and remove renal stones from kidneys or ureters.
  • Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is performed to remove kidney or upper ureter stones that are too large to be dissolved through ESWL or URSL.
  • In Ureteroscopic lithotripsy (URSL), the surgeon inserts a ureteroscope through the urethra to locate the stones, and then the stones are destroyed using shock waves. A urethral stent may be placed at the end of the surgery to keep the ureter open after the procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a 6.5 mm kidney stone pass naturally?

Kidney stones that are 4 to 6 mm in size have around a 60% chance of passing naturally. If it does not, you are likely to need medical or surgical treatment for the removal.

Do I need surgery to remove a 6.5 mm kidney stone?

No, surgery is rarely the first choice of treatment for the removal of a 6.5 mm kidney stone. The urologist will prescribe some medications that will dissolve the stone so that it can pass through the urinary tract.

Is it okay to leave a 6.5 mm stone untreated?

It is never okay to leave a kidney stone untreated. Over time, there are significant chances that the stone will grow in size and cause pain and other symptoms. Therefore, it is always better to seek treatment at an earlier stage.

How long does it take to pass a 6.5 mm kidney stone?

A stone can stay in your kidney indefinitely, stagnant in one place and not cause any symptoms. But once it starts moving along the urinary tract, it may take around 30 to 45 days to pass the stone naturally. With medications, the stone may take a shorter time to pass.

What is the best treatment method for 6.5 mm kidney stones?

Stones that are 6.5 mm are usually removed using ureteroscopy or Holmium laser. Both are non-invasive treatment procedures that are effective in breaking stones into smaller pieces. If a complication arises, such as a kidney infection, the doctor may take a surgical approach for the treatment.

When does a doctor recommend surgical removal of the kidney stone?

Usually, a 6.5 mm kidney stone can pass through the urinary tract after medical intervention. However, in some circumstances, the doctor might recommend surgery immediately. This usually happens when the stone has entered the ureter and is blocking the urine flow. It can cause infection or severely damage the kidneys.
If that’s not the case, the doctor will prescribe medications to dissolve the stone and give a waiting period. In case you experience unbearable pain or develop complications, such as UTIs, kidney damage, intractable pain, vomiting, etc., surgery will be the only plausible way to treat kidney stones.
You can contact Pristyn Care for elective and emergency treatment of kidney stones.
