Kidney stones that are 4 to 6 mm in size have around a 60% chance of passing naturally. If it does not, you are likely to need medical or surgical treatment for the removal.
No, surgery is rarely the first choice of treatment for the removal of a 6.5 mm kidney stone. The urologist will prescribe some medications that will dissolve the stone so that it can pass through the urinary tract.
It is never okay to leave a kidney stone untreated. Over time, there are significant chances that the stone will grow in size and cause pain and other symptoms. Therefore, it is always better to seek treatment at an earlier stage.
A stone can stay in your kidney indefinitely, stagnant in one place and not cause any symptoms. But once it starts moving along the urinary tract, it may take around 30 to 45 days to pass the stone naturally. With medications, the stone may take a shorter time to pass.
Stones that are 6.5 mm are usually removed using ureteroscopy or Holmium laser. Both are non-invasive treatment procedures that are effective in breaking stones into smaller pieces. If a complication arises, such as a kidney infection, the doctor may take a surgical approach for the treatment.
Usually, a 6.5 mm kidney stone can pass through the urinary tract after medical intervention. However, in some circumstances, the doctor might recommend surgery immediately. This usually happens when the stone has entered the ureter and is blocking the urine flow. It can cause infection or severely damage the kidneys.
If that’s not the case, the doctor will prescribe medications to dissolve the stone and give a waiting period. In case you experience unbearable pain or develop complications, such as UTIs, kidney damage, intractable pain, vomiting, etc., surgery will be the only plausible way to treat kidney stones.
