Kidney Stone Diagnosis & Treatment

Diagnosis

If you have symptoms of a kidney stone, your urologist may perform the following diagnostic tests to confirm the presence of kidney stones and draft a treatment plan:

  • Blood and urine tests: Blood tests help assess the calcium and uric acid levels in the blood, which helps evaluate the health of the kidneys. A 24-hour urine collection test examines the components of the urine for stone-forming minerals and stone-preventing substances.
  • Imaging tests: Imaging tests like CT scans, abdominal X-rays, and ultrasounds help reveal the size and location of kidney stones.
  • Stone analysis: Often, large kidney stones are associated with small kidney stones. If you collect your urine and pass it through a strainer, you can obtain small renal stones and send them to the lab for analysis.

Surgery

For a kidney stone, you may need one of the following treatments:

  • ESWL (Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy) is a common noninvasive treatment in which shock waves like X-rays or ultrasounds are used to break down stones in the urinary system, pancreas, or bile ducts.
  • RIRS (Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery) is an endoscopic surgery in which the surgeon uses a fiberoptic endoscope and a ureteroscope to locate and remove renal stones from kidneys or ureters.
  • Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is performed to remove a kidney or upper ureter stones that are too large to be dissolved through ESWL or URSL.
  • In Ureteroscopic lithotripsy (URSL), the surgeon inserts a ureteroscope through the urethra to locate the stones, and then the stones are destroyed using shock waves. A urethral stent may be placed at the end of the surgery to keep the ureter open after the procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a 9 mm kidney stone large?

A kidney stone is said to be large when it measures up to 5 mm or larger. Hence, a 9 mm kidney stone is considered large.

Can you pass a 9 mm kidney stone?

It will be difficult for you to pass a kidney stone which is 9 mm in size. It may or may not be able to move through the urinary tract. In 50% of cases, it is likely to get stuck which will cause excruciating pain and other symptoms as well.

Is it possible to dissolve a 9 mm kidney stone?

A 9 mm stone is less likely to be dissolved with medicines. However, holmium laser or extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy can be used to break the kidney stones in small pieces. Then, the stones can be passed through urine.

Will I need surgery to get rid of a 9 mm kidney stone?

In 50% of patients who have 9 mm kidney stones, surgical treatment is usually required. The most effective treatment for them is extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL), which is a non-invasive procedure.  This method involves using high-energy shock waves to break the stones and expel them through the urinary tract. If it doesn’t work, then surgical treatment is considered.

What are the treatment options for 9 mm kidney stones?

There are several surgical options available for kidney stones of 9 mm. These include-

  • Using sound waves to break the stones (extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy)
  • Surgery to remove the stones from the kidney (Percutaneous nephrolithotomy)
  • Using a scope to remove the stones (ureteroscope)
  • With the help of an endoscope (retrograde intrarenal surgery)

The doctor usually determines the most suitable treatment after evaluating the patients and finding out the size of the stones.

When should I see a Urologist for kidney stones treatment?

You should consult a urologist if you notice any or all of the symptoms –

  • Severe pain in the side and back that comes and goes
  • The intensity of the pain fluctuates often
  • Pain or burning sensations while urinating
  • The color or urine changes and become pink, red, or brown
  • Fever and chills may occur if you get an infection in the urinary tract due to stones
  • Pain accompanied by nausea and vomiting
  • If blood comes in urine.

It is highly likely that you won’t be able to identify the condition of kidney stones yourself. Thus, it is crucial that you see a urology specialist. You can schedule your consultation with Pristyn Care’s expert urologists for free and discuss your treatment options with them.
