What is an angiolipoma?

An angiolipoma is a small, benign lump that grows under the skin around the blood vessels. It is a rare type of lipoma. Around 5 to 17% of lipomas are angiolipomas. They can form on different body parts but mostly occur on the forearms, trunk, upper arms, neck, and legs. They are typically small, less than 4 cm, and often start forming after puberty. This type is usually found in people between 20 to 30 years old. It is very rare in children and adults older than 50.

How to Diagnosis Angiolipoma?

Before surgery for Angiolipoma, the following tests may be done:

  • Biopsy: A small sample of the lump is taken and examined under a microscope to confirm the diagnosis.
  • Ultrasound: This imaging test uses sound waves to create images of the lump and surrounding tissues.
  • MRI: Magnetic resonance imaging provides detailed images of the lump and surrounding tissues.
  • Blood tests: These may be done to check for any underlying medical conditions that may affect the surgery.
  • ECG: An electrocardiogram may be done to check the electrical activity of the heart.
  • Chest X-ray: This may be done to check for any abnormalities in the lungs or heart.
  • CT scan: This imaging test uses X-rays to create detailed images of the lump and surrounding tissues.

Are you going through any of these symptoms?

What Is Angiolipoma Surgery?

Angiolipoma surgery is a type of procedure used to remove lipomas that are composed of a mixture of fatty and vascular tissue.

Common surgeries for Angiolipoma include:

  • Excision: This is a surgical procedure to completely remove the Angiolipoma with a sharp instrument, intending to prevent any risk of recurrence or progression.
  • Liposuction: This is an outpatient treatment where a thin suction tube or cannula is inserted into the angiolipoma, and excess fat is removed by suction.
  • Injection Sclerotherapy: A needle is used to inject a chemical sclerosant into the angiolipoma, resulting in scarring and fibrosis that reduces the size of the lesion over time.

What Happens In Angiolipoma Surgery?

During the surgery for Angiolipoma, the surgeon first makes an incision in the skin and then removes the benign fatty tumours. In some cases, the blood supply to the Angiolipoma may also need to be cut off to prevent any bleeding. The procedure is usually done under local anaesthesia and takes around 45-60 minutes to complete.

During The Procedure

Angiolipoma surgery includes the following steps:

  • Preoperative preparation: The patient is prepared for surgery by cleaning the surgical site and administering anaesthesia.
  • Incision: The surgeon makes an incision in the skin over the Angiolipoma to gain access to the underlying tissue.
  • Dissection: The surgeon carefully dissects the tissue surrounding the Angiolipoma to isolate them from the surrounding tissue.
  • Hemostasis: The surgeon controls any bleeding that may occur during the procedure by cauterising blood vessels or using clamps.
  • Removal of Angiolipoma: The surgeon removes the Angiolipoma by carefully dissecting them from surrounding tissue and removing them intact.
  • Closure: The surgeon closes the incision using sutures or staples, and applies a sterile dressing to the wound.

Benefits Of Angiolipoma Surgery?

Here are some benefits of surgery for Angiolipoma:

  • Removal of the tumour: Surgery involves the complete removal of the angiolipoma. This eliminates the possibility of the tumour growing back, which can happen with other treatments like liposuction or steroid injections.
  • Quick recovery: Surgery for Angiolipoma is a minimally invasive procedure that can be done on an outpatient basis. This means that patients can return home the same day and resume their normal activities within a few days.
  • Reduced pain and discomfort: Angiolipoma can cause pain and discomfort, especially when they grow in size. Surgery can relieve these symptoms and improve the quality of life for patients.
  • Improved appearance: Angiolipoma can be unsightly, especially when they grow on visible parts of the body like the face or neck. Surgery can remove the tumour and improve the appearance of the affected area.
  • Peace of mind: Surgery for Angiolipoma is a safe and effective treatment option. Patients can have peace of mind knowing that the tumour has been completely removed and that there is no risk of it growing back.

How To Prepare For Angiolipoma Surgery?

Following preparations must be made for the Angiolipoma surgery:

  • Follow your doctor’s instructions: Your doctor will give you a list of instructions to follow before the surgery. It is important to follow these instructions carefully to ensure that you are properly prepared for the surgery.
  • Stop smoking: If you smoke, it is important to stop at least two weeks before the surgery. Smoking can interfere with the healing process and increase the risk of complications.
  • Avoid certain medications: Your doctor will advise you to avoid certain medications before the surgery, such as blood thinners and aspirin. These medications can increase the risk of bleeding during surgery.
  • Eat a healthy diet: Eating a healthy diet before surgery can help improve your overall health and reduce the risk of complications.
  • Stay hydrated: Drinking plenty of water before the surgery can help ensure that you are properly hydrated and reduce the risk of complications.
  • Ask questions: If you have any questions or concerns about the surgery, be sure to ask your doctor. They will be happy to answer any questions you may have and help you prepare for the procedure.

What To Expect After Angiolipoma Surgery?

After Angiolipoma surgery, most patients experience minimal pain, swelling, and redness at the surgical incision site that typically resolves within a few days after surgery.

  • The treated area may feel tight or numb due to the removal of tissue
  • Bruising can also occur near the incision site in some individuals and can take up to two weeks to resolve.
  • Although rare, infection and bleeding at the surgical site are possible after surgery.

Risks And Complications Of Angiolipoma Surgery

Although the risks and complications associated with the surgery are rare, they may include:

  • Infection: Any surgical procedure can lead to infection. In the case of angiolipoma surgery, the wound may get infected leading to further complications.
  • Bleeding: There is a risk of bleeding during and after the surgery. This may require a blood transfusion or further surgery to stop the bleeding.
  • Nerve damage: The angiolipoma may be located close to nerves, which may get damaged during the surgery. This may lead to numbness or weakness in the affected area.
  • Scarring: Surgery may leave scars on the skin. The size and location of the scar depend on the size and location of the angiolipoma.
  • Recurrence: There is a chance of the angiolipoma recurring after the surgery. This may require further surgery.
  • Anaesthesia complications: Anesthesia is used to numb the area during surgery. In rare cases, anaesthesia may lead to complications like allergic reactions or breathing problems.

What Happens If Angiolipoma Are Not Treated On Time?

If Angiolipoma is not treated on time:

  • They can continue to grow and may become painful.
  • Additionally, they may increase the risk of infection and other complications.
  • If left untreated, the lipomas could compress nearby nerves or organs, or they could become malignant tumours.

Therefore, it is important to have them evaluated by a doctor and to begin treatment as soon as possible.

What Not To Do After Angiolipoma Surgery

Some of the steps which are needed to be followed after the surgery :

  • Do not smoke as it can delay the healing process and increase the risk of infections.
  • Avoid consuming alcohol as it can interact with post-surgery medications.
  • Do not lift heavy objects or engage in strenuous activities until cleared by the doctor.
  • Avoid touching or picking at the incision site to prevent infections.
  • Do not skip or alter the medication dosage without consulting the doctor.
  • Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery while on medication.
  • Don’t hesitate to contact the doctor if you observe any unusual symptoms or side effects.

Recovery After Angiolipoma Surgery

Recovery after surgery for Angiolipoma typically involves:

  • Taking pain medication as prescribed.
  • Keeping the incision clean and dry.
  • Avoiding strenuous physical activity for several weeks.
  • Attending follow-up appointments with your surgeon to monitor healing and address any concerns or complications.

The length and intensity of recovery can vary depending on the size and location of the angiolipoma(s) removed and your overall health status.

It is important to follow your surgeon’s post-operative instructions carefully to ensure the best possible outcome.
