What is Hip Liposuction?

Hip liposuction, also known as hip reduction surgery, is a cosmetic procedure that helps to remove excess fat from the hip area. As people age, the hip area, also known as muffin tops or love handles, becomes more saggy, and the waistline appears out of shape completely. Development of the saddlebags and ptotic hips look unpleasant and becomes a cause for physical and psychological problems. Most people who choose this treatment are women as they feel tend to retain a large amount of fat in the lower body, especially the hips.

Thus, hip liposuction helps them to enhance the shape and contours of the hips by targeting specific areas where fat accumulates, including the hip region and flanks. Once the unwanted fat is removed from the hips, the shape becomes proportionate to other body parts.

Who is an Ideal Candidate for Hip Fat Removal Surgery?

An individual can undergo hip liposuction or lipoplasty if he/she has disproportionately large hips, lost considerable weight, and wishes to address the sagginess. An individual can also consider the treatment if he/she feels bothered by the appearance of hips as they have lost firmness and shape due to aging. Some people also choose to undergo hip lipo to reverse the effects of previous hip augmentation surgery.

In all scenarios, the plastic surgeon follows standard eligibility criteria to determine if a candidate is ideal for hip liposuction. The criteria include the following:

  • The candidate has physical or cosmetic concerns regarding the hips.
  • The candidate is in overall good health and has no medical condition that can increase the risk of surgery or impair the body’s healing abilities.
  • The candidate is within 30% of his/her ideal weight, and it is stable.
  • The candidate is willing to quit smoking for a specified period before and after the surgery.
  • The candidate has realistic expectations from the treatment and understands what can be successfully achieved.

The plastic surgeon determines the individual’s eligibility during the initial consultation and proceeds further accordingly.

Are you going through any of these symptoms?

Different Techniques Used for Hip Liposuction

There are several techniques used for hip liposuction, and the choice of technique depends on various factors, including the patient’s anatomy, the amount of fat to be removed, and the surgeon’s preference. Here are some common techniques used for hip liposuction:

  • Tumescent Liposuction: This technique involves injecting a solution of saline, lidocaine (a local anesthetic), and epinephrine (a medication that constricts blood vessels) into the hip area. This solution helps numb the area, minimize bleeding, and make fat removal easier. The fat is then suctioned out using a cannula.
  • Power-Assisted Liposuction (PAL): PAL uses a specialized cannula that vibrates or oscillates rapidly. This vibration helps break up the fat cells, making them easier to remove. This technique can be particularly useful to target fibrous or dense areas of fat, and it may result in less trauma to surrounding tissues.
  • Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction (UAL): UAL involves the use of ultrasonic energy to liquefy fat before its removal. A special cannula that emits ultrasonic waves is inserted into the hip area, which breaks down the fat cells. The liquified fat is then removed using a suction device. This technique is beneficial for stubborn fat deposits that are otherwise harder to reach.
  • Laser-Assisted Liposuction (LAL): This technique utilizes laser energy to liquefy the fat cells. A laser fiber is inserted in the target area through small incisions, and the laser energy is directed at them. It melts the fat tissues, which are then removed using vacuum suction. It is a highly beneficial technique for patients who wish to get skin-tightening effects from the treatment.

The specific technique used by the surgeon for hip liposuction depends on the patient’s needs. The doctor informs the patient about the pros and cons of each technique to help them make an informed decision.

What Happens During Hip Liposuction Surgery?

Hip liposuction surgery is performed on an outpatient basis. The patient needs to get admitted to the hospital in the morning and sign the consent form before proceeding. The steps involved in the procedure are as below:

  • First, the surgeon administers anesthesia to numb the patient’s body and ensure they don’t feel any kind of pain or discomfort during the procedure. Either local or general anesthesia may be used.
  • Once the area is numb, the surgeon strategically makes one or two small incisions near the hip area to insert the liposuction cannula.
  • If tumescent liposuction is being performed, a tumescent solution is injected first, which contains saline, anesthetic, and vasoconstrictor. The solution numbs the area, reduces bleeding, and facilitates fat removal.
  • Then, the cannula is inserted through the incision in the fatty tissues. The movement of the cannula depends on the technique being used. For instance, if tumescent liposuction is performed, the cannula is moved back and forth. And if power-assisted liposuction is performed, the cannula oscillates or vibrates to break the fat cells.
  • The cannula is attached to a vacuum device or syringe that suctions out the broken or melted fat cells.
  • The surgeon carefully sculpts and contours the hip area to achieve the desired shape while paying attention to the patient’s anatomy and aesthetic goals.
  • Once the desired results are achieved, the surgeon closes the incisions using stitches or surgical tape. In case of microincisions, they are left open to allow drainage of excess fluids.

The entire procedure takes around 1 to 2 hours to complete. After the surgery, the patient is transferred to a recovery room where his/her vitals are monitored for a few hours until the effects of anesthesia wear off.

How to Prepare for Hip Liposuction?

Preparation for cosmetic surgeries, like hip liposuction, is essential to ensure a smooth and successful surgery and recovery. First, it’s important that the patient openly discusses his/her goals from the treatment with a certified plastic surgeon. The surgeon will evaluate the patient’s health, examine the hip area, and provide personalized recommendations regarding the treatment.

The surgeon also reviews the patient’s medical history and suggests some necessary lab tests to evaluate their overall health. It’s also important that the patient tells the doctor about their existing medical conditions, medication intake, allergies, and previous surgeries.

So, here are some general guidelines that will help the patients to prepare for the procedure.

  • The patient needs to quit smoking in advance of the surgery. Smoking can increase the risk of complications and impede the healing process. Thus, the patient should stop smoking at least 2-3 weeks before the procedure.
  • The doctor will also advise to avoid taking certain medications, such as aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), herbal supplements, and over-the-counter medicines.
  • If the patient takes certain medications on a regular basis, the doctor may adjust the dosages or ask to discontinue the medicine temporarily.
  • The patient needs to maintain a stable weight before the procedure, as weight fluctuations can affect the final outcome of liposuction.
  • The patient should also arrange for transportation and post-operative assistance. After the surgery, the patient won’t be able to drive back home. Furthermore, he/she will need assistance to perform house chores in the initial days of recovery.
  • It’s also important for the patient to avoid drinking and eating anything 6-8 hours prior to the surgery.
  • The patient is advised to take a proper bath using an antibacterial soap before the surgery and avoid using all types of skincare products.
  • Wear comfortable clothes on the day of surgery that are easy to wear and remove.

These tips will help patients ensure they are in optimal health before the procedure and prepared for the surgery.

What to Expect After Undergoing Hip Liposuction?

Immediately after the surgery, the patient can expect to feel slightly disoriented due to the effects of anesthesia. Other things that can be expected after getting hip liposuction are

  • Pain and Discomfort: Some pain, soreness, and discomfort are common after the procedure. For this, the doctor will prescribe painkillers to manage the discomfort during the recovery.
  • Swelling and Bruising: These side effects are also temporary but may persist for several weeks after the surgery. To reduce the swelling and inflammation, the doctor will prescribe anti-inflammatory medicines.
  • Drainage: In the initial days after surgery, the patient may experience fluid and blood drainage. To facilitate this, small drainage tubes are placed with incisions that are removed after a week or so.
  • Scarring: Though liposuction incisions are placed inconspicuously, initially, they will look quite bad. The incisions will take 10-14 days to heal, and the scar will be clearly visible. As the wound starts to heal, the scar’s appearance will improve, and it’ll fade away with proper care.

A compression garment is also given to the patient to support the treated area and aid in the healing process. This garment should be worn by the patient 24×7 for as long as recommended by the doctor. The patient is given detailed instructions about post-op care to ensure optimal healing.

Risks & Complications Associated with Hip Liposuction

While hip liposuction is generally considered safe, like any surgical procedure, it carries potential risks and complications. Here are some potential risks and complications associated with hip liposuction:

  • Excessive bleeding can occur during or after the surgery.
  • Risk of infection at the incision site.
  • Fluid accumulation or seroma may also occur if the drainage tube is clogged.
  • Some contour irregularities or lumps may also form after the surgery that will improve over time or may require further treatment.
  • There might be asymmetry in the shape and size of the hips after the procedure.
  • Temporary numbness may also be present in the treated area due to nerve damage. This might also cause tingling sensations.
  • Liposuction alone may not address the laxity issues in the skin, due to which the patient may require skin tightening treatment.
  • In some cases, the patient may also experience severe scarring, such as hypertrophic or keloid scars, which will need additional treatment.

In some cases, the patient may also develop blood clots due to immobility. However, the doctor will take the necessary steps to reduce the risk of these complications and ensure the patient gets desired results.

Benefits of Hip Liposuction Surgery

Hip liposuction surgery offers several benefits that can improve both physical appearance and self-confidence. Here are some of the key benefits of hip liposuction:

  • Fat Reduction: Hip liposuction effectively removes excess fat deposits from the hip area, helping to improve body contour and achieve a more proportionate figure. It targets stubborn fat that may be resistant to diet and exercise, allowing for a more sculpted appearance.
  • Enhanced Body Proportions: By removing excess fat from the hips, liposuction can create a more balanced and proportionate silhouette. It can help achieve an hourglass shape in women or enhance natural curves, resulting in a more aesthetically pleasing body contour.
  • Improved Clothing Fit: Excessive fat in the hip area can make it challenging to find well-fitting clothing. Hip liposuction can eliminate bulges and love handles, allowing clothes to fit more comfortably and flatteringly. It may also expand clothing options and boost confidence in wearing different styles.
  • Boost in Self-Confidence: Many individuals who undergo hip liposuction report an increase in self-confidence and body satisfaction. By achieving a more desirable body shape, they may feel more comfortable and confident in their appearance, leading to improved overall self-esteem.
  • Motivation for a Healthy Lifestyle: Liposuction is not a substitute for a healthy lifestyle. However, it can serve as a motivator for maintaining a healthy lifestyle post-surgery. Patients often feel inspired to continue taking care of their bodies to maintain the results achieved through liposuction.
  • Potential Skin Tightening: In some cases, liposuction can stimulate collagen production and promote mild skin tightening. The procedure’s effects, combined with the body’s natural healing process, may result in improved skin elasticity and a smoother appearance in the treated area.

Recovery Timeline After Hip Liposuction

The recovery after hip liposuction will take around a month, and the final results may take even longer to become apparent. The recovery timeline varies for each patient depending on the extent of the procedure and individual healing abilities.

The first week after surgery will be the most difficult for the patients. They will experience pain and discomfort, the treated area will be swollen and bruised. Pain medications will be prescribed to the patient along with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medicines to make the period manageable. The patient will start to feel better after the first week as the side effects of surgery will start to subside.

The drainage tubes will be removed after a week, and the patient can start light activities afterward. The incisions will be removed within 10-14 days. Within a month, the patient will have almost recovered, and the doctor will advise to start exercising to further improve the hip contours.

Tips to Follow During Recovery After Hip Lipo

During the recovery period, the patient will have to take several precautions and measures to ensure smooth healing and optimal results. Some general tips that patients have to follow are given below:

  • Wear the compression garment or elastic bandages 24×7 to reduce the swelling, support the treated area, and promote healing. Wear them as directed by the doctor.
  • Take any prescribed medications, including pain relievers and antibiotics, as directed by the surgeon. They will help manage any discomfort or pain during the initial stages of recovery, while antibiotics prevent infection.
  • Clean the incision sites as instructed by the surgeon and keep them dry and clean. Change the dressing and bandages frequently to prevent moisture buildup.
  • Avoid taking a shower, using hot tubs, or swimming to prevent submerging the incisions in water. This can cause infection in the incision site.
  • Use cold compresses or ice packs on the treated area to manage the swelling and bruising. But cover them using a cloth or towel to avoid direct contact.
  • Take ample rest throughout the recovery, and don’t strain the body. Let pain be the guide to resuming basic activities. The doctor will advise increasing activity levels gradually.
  • Eat a healthy and balanced diet, rich in nutrients, that aid in the healing process. Include foods that support tissue repair and reduce inflammation, such as lean proteins, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, etc. The doctor may also advise the patient to avoid eating certain foods or supplements that can interfere with the healing and contribute to swelling.
  • Keep the body hydrated by drinking water and other fluids. This will help to flush out toxins from the body.
  • Regularly attend follow-up appointments so the surgeon can monitor the progress, address the patient’s concerns, and adjust the medicine dosages accordingly.

The patient has to be very careful and diligent in following the doctor’s instructions to get optimal results from hip liposuction. If there are signs of post-op complications, such as persistent fever, severe pain, blood or pus drainage, etc., contact the surgeon immediately.

Cost of Liposuction for Hip in India

The approximate cost range for liposuction of the hip in India is between INR 70,000 to INR 2,00,000 or more. It is only an estimated cost range, and the actual cost will vary for each patient due to various factors.

The key factors that influence the cost include the patient’s location, the doctor’s fee, costs associated with the medical facility, the technique used for liposuction, anesthesia type, and additional treatments. Besides these factors, the patient also has to bear other expenses such as medications, compression garments, follow-up consultations, travel, etc.

FAQs Around Liposuction For Hips Fat Removal

Can hip liposuction completely eliminate cellulite?

While hip liposuction can improve the appearance of cellulite to some extent, it is not primarily intended as a treatment for cellulite. Other procedures, such as laser treatments or skin tightening procedures, may be more effective for reducing cellulite.

Is it possible to gain weight again in the treated hip area after liposuction?

Liposuction permanently removes fat cells from the treated area, but it does not prevent the remaining fat cells from expanding. It means that if you fail to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle, you may regain weight in the hip area along with the rest of the body.

Can liposuction alone address sagging skin in the hip area?

Liposuction primarily targets excess fat, and its effects on skin tightening are limited. If significant skin laxity is present, additional procedures such as a thigh lift or body contouring may be necessary to achieve the desired outcome.

How soon after hip liposuction can I start exercising?

It is important to follow the surgeon’s instructions regarding physical activity. Straining the body in the initial days after surgery can put undue pressure on the hips and may also tear up the incisions.  The patient can resume basic activities within a few weeks, strenuous exercises or heavy lifting should be avoided for 3-4 weeks to allow proper healing.
