  • Recovery After Liposuction Surgery- An Overview

    Liposuction surgery is a cosmetic procedure that helps to remove the excess fat from different body parts to improve the existing shape and contours. The recovery period after liposuction surgery is very crucial to ensure optimal results and minimize complications.

    In general, it can take several weeks to months to recover after liposuction. The recovery duration varies for each patient depending on the extent of the procedure, the amount of fat removed, and individual factors, such as the patient’s age, overall health, body composition, etc.  It’s also important for the patient to follow the post-op instructions strictly to get the best results from the surgery.

    One thing to keep in mind is that liposuction is not a weight-loss treatment. It can certainly remove the existing fat pockets from the body but cannot prevent new fat cells from forming. Thus, a patient who gets the treatment has to follow strict guidelines to achieve and retain the results.

    Week-to-Week Recovery Timeline After Liposuction

    As mentioned above, the recovery after liposuction surgery can take around few weeks to months. Every patient will recover at his/her own pace, but the general timeline will be as below- 

    Week 1:

    • Immediately after the surgery, patients will need to rest and avoid strenuous activities.
    • The patient may experience pain, swelling, bruising, and soreness in the treated area.
    • It’s important to wear compression garments as instructed by the surgeon to help reduce swelling and improve healing.
    • Most patients can return to light activities, such as walking, within a few days.

    Week 2:

    • Swelling and bruising should start to improve by the second week, but some discomfort may still be present.
    • The patient may be able to resume work depending on their job’s physical demands but should still avoid strenuous activities.
    • Some improvement in the body shape will become noticeable within 2 weeks, but the final results will take longer.
    • The patient can reduce the duration of wearing compression garments, but wearing undergarments like wired bras should be avoided.

    Week 3-4:

    • Most of the swelling and bruising should subside by this point.
    • The patient can resume more strenuous activities and exercise but should still avoid anything that causes pain or discomfort.
    • The body will continue to heal and the contours will improve gradually, and the patient may start to see more noticeable changes in his/her body shape.
    • The patient can stop wearing the compression garment and wear all types of clothes to his/her liking.

    Week 6-8:

    • Within 6 weeks, most patients recover completely and return to their normal activities.
    • The results of the liposuction procedure will start to become more apparent at this point, but the final results may take several months to a year to become clearly visible.

    Remember that recovery timelines vary for each patient. And it’s important that the patient follows the surgeon’s post-operative instructions and attend all follow-up appointments to ensure a smooth and successful recovery.

    Diet to Follow After Liposuction Surgery

    Typically, a healthy and balanced diet is recommended by the doctor after having liposuction to ensure that the patient doesn’t gain weight, enjoys the results of liposuction for a long time, and gives up unhealthy eating habits. The dietary instructions given by the doctor will include the following.

    What to Eat After Liposuction?

    The best foods to eat after getting liposuction are the ones that have high nutritional value and contribute to the healing process.

    • Lean proteins such as chicken, fish, nuts, legumes, and tofu support tissue repair and growth.
    • Fruits and vegetables that are high in antioxidants and fiber reduce inflammation and aid in digestion.
    • Whole grains such as brown rice and quinoa for energy and to regulate blood sugar levels.
    • Healthy fats such as avocados, nuts, and olive oil reduce inflammation and promote heart health.
    • Probiotics such as kefir, kimchi, tempeh, pickles, miso, yogurt, etc., minimize the effects of antibiotics on the gut bacteria and maintain metabolic activity. 
    • Foods high in iron, vitamin C, D, and magnesium, such as spinach, broccoli, bananas, dark chocolate, salmon, egg yolks, sardines, soy milk, and citrus fruits to support wound healing.

    What to Avoid After Liposuction? 

    While taking a healthy diet, it’s also important to avoid eating unhealthy foods that can contribute to inflammation and impair healing abilities. The patient needs to avoid the following foods- 

    • Processed foods, such as hot dogs, salami, bacon, etc. that are high in sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats.
    • Refined grains, such as white bread, pasta, rice crackers, etc., as they can cause inflammation. 
    • Alcoholic beverages as they can interfere with the healing process and cause dehydration.
    • High-sugar drinks such as soda and fruit juices as they can lead to weight gain and inflammation.
    • Fast food and fried foods are high in unhealthy fats and can increase the risk of infection.
    • Foods that are difficult to digest or can cause bloating, such as dairy, beans, and spicy foods.

    Although liposuction can dramatically improve body contours, patients should remember that they can regain weight if they return to unhealthy eating habits. Only by incorporating healthy eating habits and lifestyle, the patient will be able to enjoy the new contours of life. 

    Exercises Recommended After Liposuction

    If a healthy diet is not combined with exercise, the patient may not be able to achieve the desired results. Though the patient is not allowed to exercise after surgery in the first month, later on, it’s imperative to start exercising.  This ensures that fat cells in other body parts don’t become active and create a disproportionate figure. Along with that, the patient also needs to focus on the visceral fat, and only exercise will help to prevent the formation of visceral fat.

    • Strength Training Exercises: Also called resistance training and weight training, these exercises can help to tone the muscles and improve overall body composition. Patients should avoid strength training the treated areas and only focus on the unaffected parts of the body.
    • Yoga or Pilates: These low-impact exercises can help improve flexibility, balance, and muscle tone. However, it’s important to avoid any poses or movements that can strain the treated areas.

    Discuss which exercises are safe to do in the initial recovery phase. Once the body has healed completely, the patient will be able to perform all exercises, which will help to improve the body contours and enhance the results of liposuction surgery.

    Getting rid of excess body fat through liposuction doesn’t mean that the patient can get back to his/her sedentary, inactive, and unhealthy lifestyle. Liposuction is a temporary solution to remove the fats, and the only way to get long-lasting results is by making the suggested changes in the daily lifestyle.

    The lifestyle changes recommended by the liposuction surgeon is likely to include the following-

    • Maintaining a healthy weight through a balanced diet and regular exercise can help prevent the accumulation of new fat cells in the treated areas.
    • Eating a healthy diet that is low in processed foods, saturated fats, and added sugars can help promote healing and reduce inflammation. Focus on incorporating lean proteins, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fiber-rich foods into your diet.
    • Exercising can help maintain the results of the procedure and improve overall health. Start with low-impact activities such as walking, stretching, and light cardio, and gradually increase the intensity and duration.

    • Wear a compression garment as directed for as long as needed. 
    • Keep the body hydrated and drink plenty of water and other fluids to manage the swelling.

    • Eat a healthy and balanced diet rich in protein, vitamins, minerals, and other nutritions.

    • Don’t drink alcoholic beverages until approved by the surgeon, as they cause severe dehydration and impact the healing process. 
    • Don’t try to perform high-impact exercises until the doctor says it’s safe. 
    • Avoid taking any over-the-counter medications or supplements without consulting the surgeon first.
