What is Mustache Hair Transplant?

A mustache hair transplant is a procedure performed to enhance the growth of facial hair. It involves harvesting healthy follicles from the scalp and implanting the follicles in the mustache area. Mustache is generally considered a sign of masculinity in males in India. However, some men cannot grow a proper mustache and/or beard due to several reasons, such as genetic and hereditary factors, lifestyle issues, injuries, etc.

Mustache transplant gives such men a good option to get the desired and natural-looking mustache. Whether the patient’s mustache hairs are thin, patchy, or sparse, the advanced mustache transplant techniques will allow them to grow thick and attractive mustaches.

Who is a Good Candidate for Mustache Transplantation?

A man is considered a good candidate for a mustache transplant in the following scenarios-

  • He wants a thick mustache that looks natural.
  • He has a patchy mustache.
  • The mustache hairs are sparsely spread.
  • He has lost facial hair due to accidents, injuries, or burns.
  • He has lost hair due to allergies or reactions.
  • He has lost hair due to facelift procedures.

In all these scenarios, the individual can consider getting a mustache hair transplant. However, not every man would be a good candidate for a transplant. During the consultation, the doctor will examine the patient’s hair texture, thickness, and density in the donor and recipient areas to make the decision.

How to Prepare for Mustache Transplant?

Once the doctor confirms that the patient is eligible for a mustache transplant, the preparation for the procedure begins from the initial consultation. The doctor will gather the patient’s medical history and conduct a physical examination to check the facial hair and skin quality.

The doctor will provide the following instructions that the patient needs to follow-

  • Avoid consuming alcohol several days before the surgery. If a large amount of toxins are present in the body, anesthesia might not work, or the patient might require a higher dosage which can cause side effects.
  • Start doing facial exercises and massages as advised by the doctor.
  • Avoid trimming the facial and scalp hair a few weeks before the surgery is planned.
  • Avoid or quit smoking, as nicotine has adverse effects on the skin. Besides that, smoking also impairs the body’s healing abilities. Therefore, it’ll be best to stop smoking at least a week before the surgery.
  • Start taking vitamin C through supplements or natural foods, such as oranges, papaya, strawberry, kiwi, guava, etc.
  • Stop taking blood-thinning medications, including aspirin and other blood thinners. Certain vitamins and homeopathic medicines also act as blood thinners. So, talk to the doctor about which medicines are safe to consume.
  • Though a mustache transplant is a minor procedure, the patient needs to get some tests done, including liver function, blood tests, etc.
  • If the patient develops a cough, cold, or any other infection, he should inform the doctor, and the surgery will be postponed accordingly.

The doctor’s team usually stays in touch with the patient and provides proper guidance to ensure that he is well-prepared for the procedure.

What Happens During Mustache Transplant Surgery?

For a mustache hair transplant, generally, FUE (follicular unit extraction) technique is used. The procedure is carried out in the following steps-

  • The medial pillar or the mustache line is drawn, and anesthesia is administered in the scalp area first.
  • The surgeon uses a punch device to extract the hair follicles from the scalp region.
  • Each follicle is placed into a cold saline solution at 4 degrees Celsius.
  • The recipient area is then prepared, cleaned, and sterilized.
  • Anesthesia is administered in the recipient area to prepare it for implantation.
  • The extracted grafts are implanted carefully, considering the hair growth direction and angle. One follicle is transplanted at a time.
  • Once all hair grafts are implanted, the recipient area is cleaned again.

The entire procedure takes around 2 to 4 hours to complete. As the surgery is performed on an outpatient basis, the patient is discharged within an hour and sent home.

What to Expect After Mustache Transplant Surgery?

Immediately after the surgery, the patient can expect to feel slightly dizzy and disoriented due to the effects of anesthesia. Other things that the patient can expect are-

  • Pain and discomfort in the donor and recipient areas, which will alleviate within a few days.
  • Swelling and bruising in the treated areas may last for a few days.
  • The scalp and face will require extensive care until the hairs take root and the skin starts to heal.
  • The patient needs to wear bandages over the surgical site for a few days.

The patient is kept under observation for an hour or so and then sent home with a detailed guide that mentions all the dos and don’ts after the procedure.

Risks & Side Effects of Mustache Transplantation

Similar to all surgical procedures, mustache transplants also have some risks and side effects, such as-

  • Swelling in the scalp and mustache areas
  • Redness and tightness in the area where the hairs are implanted
  • Temporary numbness due to nerve damage
  • Reaction to anesthesia
  • Scab formation in the treated area
  • Scarring
  • Shock loss

Most of these side effects resolve on their own within a few days or weeks. Even the scars fade away and become unnoticeable as the mustache hair starts to grow.

Benefits of Mustache Hair Transplant

A mustache hair transplant can be satisfying and highly beneficial for patients. Some key benefits include the following-

  • Minimally Invasive Procedure- The entire procedure is minimally invasive thanks to the modern technique of FUE (follicular unit extraction).
  • No Major Stitches or Scars- Even if the conventional FUT (follicular unit transplant) technique is used, only a small follicular strip is taken from the scalp. Moreover, the follicles are implanted in the mustache region with small needle punches. Thus, the procedure doesn’t cause major scarring. The stitches in the scalp also fade away after some time.
  • Minimal Post-Operative Pain & Discomfort- Mild to moderate pain and discomfort is common after surgical procedures. But in the case of a mustache transplant, the pain is minimal as only small areas of the scalp and face are involved in the surgery.
  • Quick Recovery- The recovery after mustache hair transplantation is quick and short. As the skin trauma is minimal, the skin heals quickly, and the implanted hairs are lodged properly in the skin.
  • Natural-looking Results- As the patient’s own hairs are used for the transplant, the hair texture and color match the existing mustache hair. Furthermore, the surgeon implants the follicles in specific directions and angles to ensure the growth looks natural.

Recovery and Results of Mustache Transplant

Like other types of hair transplant surgery, the patient has to be patient to see the final results of the mustache transplant. The patient has to take extensive care of the implanted hair to get the desired results.

The complete recovery after a mustache hair transplant takes around 2-4 weeks. The recovery process typically involves several stages, which are explained below-

  • Immediately after the procedure: After the mustache hair transplant, the patient’s face may be swollen and bruised. This is normal, and these side effects will subside within a few days.
  • First week: During the first week after the procedure, the patient should strictly avoid touching or rubbing the transplanted area. They should also avoid any strenuous activity that could cause sweating or pressure on the face.
  • Second week- By the second week, the transplanted hair will start to fall out due to shock loss. Don’t worry about this, as it is a natural process. The patient should continue to avoid touching and/or rubbing the donor and recipient areas.
  • Third Week- Within three weeks, the transplanted hair follicles will start to take root in the skin. The patient may also notice new hair growth in the mustache area.
  • Subsequent Months- In the following months, the mustache hairs will continue to grow. The patient needs to follow the doctor’s instructions carefully in the next months until advised otherwise by the doctor.

If you experience any symptoms, such as high fever, infection, or pimple-like cysts around the implanted follicles, get in touch with the doctor as soon as possible.

Dos & Don’ts After Mustache Transplant

Here, we are listing some general dos and don’ts that the patient must follow after a mustache hair transplant-

  • Keep the transplanted area clean and dry.
  • Take the prescribed medications (antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medicines, pain medications, etc.) as directed by the surgeon.
  • Keep the head elevated while sleeping for the first few nights after the procedure.
  • Avoid rubbing, scratching, or even touching the transplanted follicles until they become properly lodged into the skin.
  • Apply ice packs to the transplanted area to reduce swelling and bruising.
  • Take a healthy and balanced diet and drink plenty of water to keep the body hydrated.
  • Be gentle while washing the face or applying skin care products.
  • Wear loose clothes that won’t rub against the face when worn or removed.
  • Avoid direct sun exposure until the skin heals completely.
  • Do not try to remove the scabs from the mustache area forcefully.
  • Do not drink or smoke for at least a week or a few days after the surgery.
  • Avoid engaging in strenuous exercises and activities that can cause strain, sweating, or pressure on the face.
  • Do not use hair styling products like gel or cream on the transplanted hair until approved by the doctor.
  • Avoid trimming the hair for 4-6 months.

If there is any other precaution that the patient needs to take, the doctor and his/her team will advise him about the same.

Alternative to Mustache Transplant

Several alternatives for mustache transplant are available which are affordable than surgical treatment. The patient can consider-

Medical Treatments- Various prescription medications are available in the market that may work to promote mustache hair growth. Some of the common medications include Rogaine, Finasteride, and Minoxidil.

Low-level Laser Therapy- Another alternative to hair transplant is getting low-level laser therapy that increases the hair shaft thickness to make them look thick and dense.

Hair Replacement System- This is the improved version of toupees and wigs. These are cover-up pieces made up of lace, monofilament, or ultra-thin skin patch woven with human hair. But this is a temporary solution that lasts for about a year or so.

Unlike surgical mustache transplant, these methods are not quite effective in delivering the desired results.
