What is myringoplasty?

Myringoplasty is a minimally invasive surgery performed to repair a ruptured eardrum. Your eardrum (tympanic membrane) is a thin, paper-like structure between the ear’s middle and outer parts. As sound waves are reflected, it vibrates to help with hearing.

It can be ruptured due to various causes like sudden noise hit, head trauma, sharp object hitting the eardrum, ear infections, etc. Myringoplasty is the best option to cure the repair eardrum and prevent it from causing severe complications like permanent hearing loss, vertigo mastoiditis (infection in the bone located behind the ear).

When the procedure is needed only for one ear, it is known as unilateral myringoplasty; when it is needed for both ears, it is known as bilateral myringoplasty.

When is Myringoplasty Required?

In most cases, the ruptured eardrum heals on its own within days or weeks. Children are most likely to have myringoplasty, and in some cases, adults also require it.

Your surgeon may recommend myringoplasty if you have the following symptoms.

  1. A ruptured eardrum which has not healed in the last three or four months.
  2. Chronic or recurrent ear infections and the medications are also not working on them.
  3. Hearing disability caused due to ruptured eardrum
  4. Sustains trauma which leads to eardrum rupture.

What happens in Myringoplasty?

Myringoplasty is a procedure that takes place under local or general anesthesia. It takes around one to two hours to complete the procedure.

For this procedure, your surgeon may recommend some diagnostic tests to examine your compatibility with the procedure.

  • Urine test: Check the urinary tract for diabetes and infections.
  • Blood Test: A blood test aims to determine the type of blood one has, whether they have infections, how quickly their blood clots, and anemia (a condition in which there are not enough blood cells to carry oxygen throughout the body).
  • Chest X-ray or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan: Checking the lungs and heart for any problems.

After examining the tests, the surgeon may choose the best option to proceed with the treatment. This treatment can be performed under the underlay and overlay techniques.

Underlay technique: The underlay technique is ideal for small ruptures in the eardrum. It involves the following steps:

  • The surgeon makes an incision behind the ear to remove the strip of the epithelial layer.
  • Place a graft made up of tissue, a gel foam-like structure beneath the skin to support the eardrum.
  • Fill the ear with antibiotic cream and apply a bandage to protect the ear canal from external infections.

Overlay Technique: This procedure is ideal for severe perforations that can’t be treated with the underlay technique.

  • The surgeon makes an incision to raise the medial meatal skin of the ear.
  • The graft is placed outside the eardrum.
  • An antibiotic is filled in the ear and then packed with a bandage.

  • Stop taking medications like aspirin, ibuprofen, warfarin, or any supplements that thin your blood. It may lead to heavy bleeding during the surgery.
  • Inform your doctor if you are allergic to anesthesia or any infection.
  • Do not eat anything at midnight prior to surgery. It may cause the reverse effects of anesthesia.
  • You should be properly aware of your problem, surgery, expected results, and the risks associated with the procedure.
  • Wear loose clothes on the day of surgery.
  • Arrange all your insurance documents prior to your surgery

How to recover after myringoplasty?

Generally, Myringoplasty takes around 2 weeks to heal completely. You can get discharged on the same day after the surgery.
