What Are Piles In Females?

Piles, referred to as Hemorrhoids, are a medical condition that impacts the anal or rectal region, i.e., from where we pass stool. Piles or hemorrhoids are commonly present in people but become evident when they get inflamed or enlarged. Not just men, even a majority of women experience piles.

Piles in women are inflamed blood vessels and tissues found underneath the rectum or under the skin around the anus. Piles in women can be treated initially with various home remedies and medications; however, surgical interventions like laser surgery are required later.

What are the Types of Piles in Females?

Piles in females can be classified into four types, as follows:

  1. External hemorrhoids: The swollen lumps are visible outside in the case of external hemorrhoids, making them very uncomfortable. Such hemorrhoids in females often induce pain during defecation, sitting, or day-to-day physical activities.
  2. Internal hemorrhoids: These occur within the rectum, therefore not being externally visible. Due to a lack of pain nerves in the rectum, no prominent symptoms are present. Hence, these hemorrhoids mostly get healed on their own. But, in case of repeated exposure to pressure and friction, they can be forced out of the anal opening, also known as prolapsed hemorrhoids.
  3. Prolapsed hemorrhoids: As we already know, internal hemorrhoids, when pushed out, are known as prolapsed hemorrhoids. Depending on the severity of piles in women, such hemorrhoids can be categorized into grades:
    • Grade I: Hemorrhoid prolapse in females happens due to pressure or strained defecation. It is not a permanent medical condition, as the hemorrhoid retracts back into the rectum shortly after.
    • Grade II: In this grade, the hemorrhoids don’t return independently. Rather, they need to be pushed back inside.
    • Grade III: This is the severe grade of piles in females, where one cannot push hemorrhoids back inside. Grade III piles are dangerous, and the person undergoes intense pain.
  4. Thrombosed hemorrhoids: Thrombosed hemorrhoids develop a “thrombus” or blood clot within themselves. Such an occurrence happens at an advanced stage if a hemorrhoid is left untreated for a long time. Removal and drainage of the clot, also known as “thrombectomy,” is usually performed for relief.

Symptoms & Causes Of Piles In Females

Symptoms

Most people with piles experience mild symptoms that may resolve within some days. Hemorrhoids are an ordinary part of the human anatomy and function as buffers around the bottom to help control bowel movements. However, hemorrhoids are filled blood vessels that can become bothersome when they get swollen due to excessive straining.

Some of the commonly observed symptoms of piles in females are:

  1. Swelling or painful lumps around the anus
  2. Pain and discomfort during defecation (bowel movement)
  3. Sudden pain while sitting or during any physical activity
  4. Blood in stools
  5. Sticky discharge while defecating
  6. Bleeding after defecation
  7. Feeling of constipation
  8. Itching around the Anus
  9. Painful mass protruding outside the anus

Causes

Piles arise due to increased pressure on the lower part of the rectum and anal cavity, which forces the veins to bulge out and swell into lumps. Piles in women can form due to the:

  • Excess weight gain, often due to pregnancy- This raises pelvic pressure and increases the risk of developing piles in females.
  • Straining while passing stools commonly happens due to constipation- Because of excess straining, pressure increases on the veins in the rectum and anus, which results in inflammation and swelling of the veins leading to hemorrhoids.
  • Excess weightlifting- Too much weightlifting can put additional pressure on the lower half, leading to the formation of piles in women.
  • A low-fiber diet- Fibre helps increase the bulk of the stools by increasing their water content. Less fiber in the diet causes constipation, further leading to piles in females.

What Is The Treatment Of Piles In Females?

Piles Diagnosis In Females

A doctor can diagnose piles in females after performing a physical examination. They will examine the anus of the person with suspected piles and may ask the following questions:

  • Do any relatives have piles?
  • Has there been any mucus or blood in the stools?
  • Has there been any recent weight loss?
  • Have bowel movements changed recently?
  • What color are the stools?

The doctor can perform a digital rectal examination (DRE) or use a proctoscope for internal piles in females. A proctoscope is basically a hollow tube fitted with a light that allows the doctor to see the anal canal up close. In addition, they can take a small tissue sample from inside the rectum for further examination.

The physician may suggest a colonoscopy if the person with piles presents symptoms that suggest another digestive system disease or demonstrates any risk factors for colorectal cancer.

Piles Treatment In Females – Female Hemorrhoid Surgery

In most cases, piles in females resolve on their own without needing any treatment. However, some treatments, like laser surgery, can help significantly decrease the pain, discomfort, and itching many females experience with piles.

Laser surgery for piles in women is one of the most successful and popular choices of treatment. Female hemorrhoid surgery is an outpatient surgical procedure in which a laser beam is utilized to shrink or ablate the piles, which are swollen and enlarged blood vessels in the anal region. It is a non-invasive medical procedure suited for females who are scared of surgery.

How to Prevent Piles in Women?

Piles can be prevented in most females by embracing some healthy lifestyle habits. Below are some steps that should be followed to prevent piles in females. These also extend to treating existing piles in women. They are as follows:

  1. Avoid sitting for too long: Sitting on the toilet for an extended period places unnecessary pressure on the veins in and around the anus, which increases the risk of developing piles in females.
  2. Don’t delay using the washroom- Many people knowingly or unknowingly delay going to the washroom, even if their body tells them otherwise. Such delay often leads to the drying out of stool which causes issues in the passage of stool, leading to unnecessary strain on the venous cushions.
  3. Tailor your Diet: Diet is important in deciding stool consistency. You don’t want the stool to get hard and lead to constipation, as in such circumstances, the risk of developing piles rises exponentially due to pressure caused during the passing of stools. Eating a healthy diet and consuming plenty of water can minimize the probability of developing constipation and thus avoid piles. The diet should be rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Including fiber-rich food items in the diet is a must.
  4. Exercise: Remain active to prevent constipation and relieve vein pressure caused by prolonged sitting or standing. Exercise can also help you lose extra pounds, which may be the reason behind your hemorrhoids.
  5. Maintain adequate body weight:  Overweight and obese women are more prone to developing piles. That’s because being overweight results in increased pressure on the veins surrounding the rectum and anal canal. Hence maintaining adequate body weight is vital in preventing piles in females. Eat fiber-rich food, exercise regularly, and drink lots of water to shed those extra kilos!

Why Should Females Not Delay Piles Treatment?

Hemorrhoids are very common, affecting 40 to 50% of the population. Delaying treatment for piles in females (Female Hemorrhoid Surgery) can cause complications that are not severe but can lead to many discomforts and issues like:

  • Anemia
  • Masses of tissue hang out on the skin
  • Severe infection
  • Advancement of disease from Grade I to Grade IV
  • Thrombosis of piles
  • Constant pressure while passing stool can result in rectum prolapse.

All of the above issues can be dangerous if you do not do treatment of piles in females.
