What is PRP?

PRP is the short form for platelet-rich plasma. Plasma is the light amber-coloured liquid component of the blood that contains proteins and other constituents. Platelets, also known as thrombocytes, are small, colourless cell fragments that form clots and promote healing by triggering cell reproduction. So, platelet-rich plasma is simply the fluid which contains these regeneration cells in a higher quantity.

The clinician takes a blood sample from the patient himself/herself and uses a centrifuge to separate the plasma from the blood. Then, PRP is injected into the targeted area to get the best PRP results. In most cases, PRP is used as a treatment method for hair loss and even after hair transplant surgery to get better PRP results.

What happens in PRP Hair Treatment?

PRP Hair Treatment is a three-step medical treatment where the patient’s blood is drawn, processed, and injected into the scalp. The process involves the following steps-

  • The patient’s blood is drawn, usually from the arm, and placed in a centrifuge (a machine that separates fluids with different densities).
  • Within 10 minutes in the centrifuge, the blood separates into three layers- platelet-poor plasma, platelet-rich plasma, and red blood cells.
  • The PRP is taken into a syringe and injected into the scalp region, which is experiencing hair loss.

Most patients dealing with hair loss require multiple PRP injections over 4 to 6 weeks apart.

PRP Side Effects

Typically, there aren’t risks involved with PRP as the patient’s blood is injected into the scalp. However, as an injection is used, the following PRP Side Effects can occur-

  • Injury to the blood vessels or nerves
  • Infection
  • Calcification at the injection points
  • Scar tissue formation
  • Reaction to anesthesia
