  • What is Normal Delivery? (Baby Normal Delivery)

Normal delivery or vaginal delivery is the process in which the baby is born through the mother’s vagina. It is the most common method of giving birth. The term ‘normal’ indicates that no surgical intervention is needed in this case, and the child is born naturally through the mother’s vagina.

A mother’s body prepares itself for a normal baby delivery during the pregnancy phase. She undergoes various bodily changes, which is the body’s way of indicating that she’s ready for normal delivery. The opening of the uterus, or the cervix, becomes softer and dilated as the mother progresses toward labor, creating a convenient pathway for the baby to descend into the birth canal and exit the mother’s body safely. In a normal delivery, the muscles at the top of the uterus contract and push the baby towards the cervix.

Normal delivery is common and poses little to no risk to the health of the baby or the mother. If a mother has had a healthy pregnancy, there were no complications in the process, and the baby is in a head-down position, she will most likely have an uncomplicated normal delivery. Normal baby delivery is linked to faster recovery and relatively fewer complications.

It should be noted that while a normal delivery is desirable, it may not be the viable option in all cases. In certain scenarios, especially if there are complications, the doctor may suggest a Cesarean or C-section. The choice of the type of childbirth method depends on the doctors based on the health of the mother as well as the baby.

    Normal Delivery Process

Normal delivery process consists of three significant stages:

    • The first stage involves labor and the gradual thinning and opening of the cervix, known as effacement.
    • The second stage is characterized by pushing efforts and the actual birth of the baby.
    • The third stage focuses on delivering the placenta.

Let’s discuss these 3 stages of normal delivery process in detail.

Stage 1: Labour and effacement of the cervix

The first stage of a normal delivery procedure is called the dilation stage. It involves a gradual opening of the cervix. This allows the baby’s head to descend into the birth canal. During this stage, regular contractions occur, which gradually increase. These contractions help with the thinning of the cervix, creating a smooth and safe passage for the baby to exit the mother’s body. It is normal for mothers to experience pelvic pressure and back pain during this stage, which occurs as a result of contractions. The duration of this stage can differ from 7 to 8 hours to 13 hours or more for mothers expecting their first child. While discomfort is common, doctors help the mother with ways to manage this discomfort. This stage is further broken down into three sub-stages:

    • Early labor: During early labor, the cervix opens up to about 4 centimeters, allowing the expectant mother to remain at home and continue regular activities. As contractions intensify and she can no longer do her chores or even speak during contractions, it indicates the shift to active labor.
    • Active labor: During active labour, the cervix opens from 4 to 7 centimeters. This indicates that the mother needs to go to the hospital. She can expect contractions every 3 to 4 minutes, with each contraction lasting around 60 seconds. This allows faster cervix dilation. Doctors suggest changing positions, getting gentle massages, using hot compresses, etc., to manage the discomfort during this phase. The water may also break during this stage.
    • Gradual transition to the second stage: During this stage, the cervix opens from 7 to 10 cm, causing intense pain and stress for most women. The mother experiences contractions every two to three minutes, and every contraction lasts around 60 to 90 seconds. The mother may feel the urge to push at this stage. However, she should wait for the healthcare provider’s approval as the cervix needs to be fully dilated. Fatigue, irritability, nausea, and temperature fluctuations may occur, and practicing slow and relaxed breathing is beneficial.

Stage 2: Pushing & birth of the baby

The second stage of normal delivery, which is referred to as the pushing phase,  begins once the cervix is fully dilated. In this stage, the contractions are very strong, but the frequency is generally less. The mother feels the urge to push, and with each contraction, she actively bears down and pushes to help the baby pass through the birth canal. The healthcare provider guides the mother during this stage and offers support and encouragement to help her. When the baby’s head emerges, which is also known as crowning, the rest of the body also emerges conveniently. The doctors support the baby’s head to assist in the delivery.

    Stage 3: Delivering the placenta

The third stage of normal delivery, or the placental phase, begins after the baby is born. The mother continues to experience contractions, but they are usually milder and manageable compared to the earlier stages. These contractions help detach and expel the placenta from the uterus. The doctor carefully examines the placenta to ensure it is fully expelled and checks for any remaining fragments. Once the placenta is delivered, the uterus continues to contract to help control bleeding and support the healing process. The doctor may also inspect the birth canal at this stage for any tears or lacerations that may require repair.

    Benefits of Normal Vaginal Delivery

Normal delivery has several benefits over cesarean delivery, which is why it is considered the preferred baby delivery method. Listed below are some benefits of normal delivery:

Short hospital stay: One advantage is shorter hospital stays compared to cesarean delivery. After a vaginal birth, mothers typically spend less time in the hospital, which allows them to return home sooner and embark on their postpartum recovery journey.

Lower risk of infections: Vaginal delivery also accompanies lower infection rates. Since it is a natural process that doesn’t involve surgical incisions, the risk of infection is reduced. The risk is generally higher in cesarean baby delivery, where surgical wounds can be susceptible to infection.

Faster recovery time: Normal delivery also accompanies quicker recovery time compared to cesarean section. The healing process with vaginal delivery is generally faster. Mothers who give birth vaginally tend to experience less postoperative pain and discomfort and are able to resume their routine activities quickly and with much more ease.

Lower chances of post-surgical bleeding: The risk of post-surgical hemorrhaging also reduces with vaginal delivery, which can occur with cesarean sections. Since vaginal delivery doesn’t involve surgical incisions, there is no need to be concerned about postoperative bleeding associated with surgical wounds.

Better bonding between mother and baby: After a vaginal birth, skin-to-skin contact and early breastfeeding become more convenient, which promotes better bonding between mother and baby.

Reduced risk of respiratory issues in babies: Babies born through vaginal delivery are at a lower risk of developing respiratory issues compared to those born through a c-section.

    C-Section Vs Normal Delivery

There are two methods of childbirth- Normal/Vaginal Delivery and Cesarean or C-Section Delivery. These procedures are required in different scenarios, and they also differ based on the process involved. Let us look at the difference between these two procedures.

    • The major difference between a vaginal delivery and a c-section is the approach to delivering the baby. In a vaginal delivery, the baby is delivered through the birth canal of the mother. On the other hand, in a c-section, the baby is delivered through an incision in the mother’s abdomen.
    • There’s also a difference in the total duration of the two types of delivery. The complete C-section delivery process typically lasts up to 45 minutes to an hour. Whereas, in the case of vaginal births, the labor and delivery can take up to 12-14 hours in total.
    • The recovery time after both deliveries also varies significantly. In the case of vaginal births, complete recovery generally takes about six weeks. On top of that, the hospital stay is much shorter in the case of a normal delivery. In case of a c-section, the total recovery period is 6 to 8 weeks, and the patient is required to stay in the hospital for slightly longer as a large incision is made in the lower abdomen.
    • The pain a patient experiences after both types of deliveries may differ for patients. All patients have a different threshold for pain and experience it differently following their delivery. But, generally, a patient feels significant pain during a vaginal delivery, while minimal pain is experienced afterward. On the contrary, the pain experienced by patients during a C-section is much lower due to the use of anesthesia, however, the recovery is quite painful.

Risks of Having a Vaginal Delivery

While normal delivery is generally safe, it does accompany certain risks and complications that may occur before or after the delivery. Let us first look at some complications that may occur before a normal delivery:

    • Uterine rupture: This is a rare but serious complication where the uterus tears during labor, leading to heavy bleeding that may harm both the mother and baby.
    • Vaginal tear and tears in the perineum: During normal baby delivery, the vaginal tissues or the area between the vulva and anus (perineum) may tear. These tears can range from minor to severe and may require stitches or further medical attention.
    • Fetal distress: It refers to the baby experiencing reduced oxygen supply, which can happen due to various reasons such as problems with the umbilical cord or placenta. Prompt medical intervention may be required to ensure the baby’s well-being.
    • Umbilical cord prolapse: In some cases, the umbilical cord may slip through the cervix before the baby, which can compress the cord and affect the baby’s oxygen supply. Immediate medical assistance is necessary to address this situation.

Listed below are some complications a woman can face following her vaginal delivery:

    • Pelvic floor injury: The muscles and tissues of the pelvic floor may get damaged, leading to temporary or long-lasting pelvic pain.
    • Pelvic organ prolapse: This happens when the bladder, uterus, and/or rectum bulge into the vagina or outside the vaginal opening due to weakened support.
    • Retained placenta: In some cases, the placenta does not completely detach or expel from the uterus after normal baby delivery, necessitating medical attention to prevent complications.
    • Urinary leakage: Following childbirth, women may experience involuntary urine leakage during activities like coughing, sneezing, or laughing.
    • Postpartum hemorrhage: Excessive bleeding after delivery, known as postpartum hemorrhage, requires immediate medical intervention to control bleeding and prevent complications.
    • Anesthesia-related complications: If anesthesia is administered during delivery, there may be a slight risk of complications associated with it. These risks are typically easily managed by healthcare providers.
    • It’s important to note that these issues may not be experienced by all mothers after a normal vaginal delivery. In case a mother experiences these issues, the doctors are trained to handle them and provide appropriate solutions.

Recovery and Post-Operative Care after Normal Delivery

After a normal or vaginal baby delivery, the woman is shifted to her room, where she and the baby’s health is monitored for any postpartum complications. Any complications noticed at this point are promptly resolved by the healthcare providers. A woman recovers gradually after the delivery, and the duration of recovery differs for all patients.

The mother can expect some contractions in the initial hours following a normal delivery. This happens as the body tries to expel the placenta, so the uterus can return to its original size (as it was before the pregnancy). Doctors assess the vaginal area to check for any tears and provide instructions to care for the normal delivery stitches. The mother is also asked to try nursing the baby at this stage.

Recovery is unique to all mothers, and therefore, their experiences with recovery can differ. Typically, in the days following the delivery, women experience some postpartum bleeding which is known as lochia. This bleeding resembles menstrual bleeding and goes away gradually on its own. It can be managed with sanitary pads. Women must not use tampons or menstrual cups as the vagina is still delicate from the delivery, and insertion of any sort can prolong the healing process. In case the woman has a vaginal tear during delivery, she may also experience some discomfort in the perineal area, which is manageable through pain-relieving medications or cold compresses.

When it comes to breastfeeding the baby, the doctor may advise the mother on how to breastfeed effectively and manage the discomfort accompanied by engorgement, i.e., a situation in which the milk is not fully removed from the breast. Increasing the frequency of breastfeeding or using breast pumps to remove extra milk from the breast may be suggested to relieve pain and tenderness.

While mothers are typically incredibly engrossed in taking care of their children at this stage, they’re advised to also prioritize self-care during this period. They must eat a healthy diet, keep themselves hydrated, and get ample sleep as the baby sleeps to ensure they remain healthy. Exercise must be resumed gradually.

Since childbirth can also trigger a range of emotions, all mothers should seek ways to manage their emotions. This may include talking to their partner, family members, and friends. They can also reach out to their healthcare provider to deal with the emotional implications of childbirth.

Diet and Lifestyle Changes After Normal Baby Delivery

Following a normal delivery, it is very important for the mother to take proper care of her health, chiefly by making the necessary dietary and lifestyle changes. Typically, the doctors suggest the dietary and lifestyle modifications a mother needs to make following her delivery. However, we have listed some standard guidelines that can help women remain healthy following their normal baby delivery and ensure there are no complications:

    1. Make sure the diet is balanced: A new mother should focus on consuming nutritious foods to provide essential nutrients for healing and breastfeeding. They must include whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats in their meals. Here are some more dietary modifications a mother should make post her delivery:
    • Drink enough water: Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day.
    • Get ample calories: While it’s crucial to eat a healthy diet, it’s also important for new mothers to ensure they’re consuming enough calories, especially if they are breastfeeding. Consulting with a healthcare professional to determine your specific calorie needs and make adjustments accordingly is recommended.
    • Include more fiber in your diet: Include fiber-rich foods such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and legumes to promote healthy digestion and prevent constipation, which is common during the postpartum period.
    • Make sure the food is rich in iron: Mothers must consume iron-rich foods like lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, and leafy greens to replenish iron stores and manage postpartum fatigue and anemia.
    • Calcium-Rich Foods: Consume calcium-rich foods like dairy products, leafy greens, fortified plant-based milk, and calcium supplements if necessary to support bone health and breastfeeding.
    • Indulge in Healthy Snacking: Opt for nutritious snacks like fruits, nuts, yogurt, and whole-grain crackers to maintain energy levels and support milk production if breastfeeding.
    • Increase protein intake: Protein is essential for tissue repair and milk production. Ensure adequate protein intake from healthy sources like lean meats, poultry, fish, eggs, legumes, and dairy products.
    • Take Supplements as Advised: The healthcare provider may recommend certain supplements such as iron, calcium, vitamin D, or omega-3 fatty acids to fulfill the mother’s nutritional needs. It is important to follow their guidance on dosage and duration.

Let us now move on to discussing the lifestyle changes a new mother should make to ensure her well-being following a normal delivery:

    • Start exercising gradually: Start with gentle exercises, like walking or postnatal yoga, after getting approval from your healthcare provider. Gradually increase intensity and duration as strength and stamina are regained. Exercise promotes physical and mental well-being.
    • Don’t rush into losing weight: Mothers who have gained weight during pregnancy should focus on gradual and healthy weight loss rather than resorting to drastic measures. They must engage in gentle exercises and maintain a balanced diet to shed pounds gradually while supporting their recovery.
    • Take proper rest:  It is suggested that new mothers should get enough rest and sleep whenever possible. Their body needs time to heal and recover from childbirth. They must take short naps, rest as much as they can, and take help with daily tasks.
    • Do some pelvic floor exercises: Pelvic floor exercises, also known as Kegels, help strengthen the pelvic floor muscles, improve bladder control, and speed up healing.

    Normal Delivery Cost in India

The cost of a normal delivery in India can vary depending on factors such as the city, hospital choice, and additional facilities. On average, it can range from Rs.15,000 to Rs.40,000 However, this is just a general estimate, and the actual cost can vary for each patient. To get an accurate cost estimate, it is recommended to contact the healthcare provider directly. They will provide you with the specific cost of treatment, including a detailed breakdown. Factors such as the location of the delivery, the hospital chosen, and any additional services required can impact the overall cost. By reaching out to the healthcare provider, patients can get a clear understanding of the expenses involved and make informed decisions about their maternity care.

Is Normal Vaginal Delivery Covered Under Insurance?

Yes. In India, insurance providers in India cover pregnancy-related expenses in their health insurance policies. Several insurance companies offer specially curated maternity insurance plans that help women and couples manage their maternity-related expenses.

Maternity insurance covers all the expenses associated with maternity and childbirth but to a certain period. Some patients buy it as a standalone policy, while others include it as an add-on insurance in their existing policy. This can be done by paying an extra premium. It is important to note that this insurance may not be available if the woman is already pregnant and generally has a waiting period of 3 to 4 years.

Maternity insurance offers coverage for both normal and cesarean-section deliveries. Certain insurance providers also cover the cost of pregnancy termination due to complications under their maternity policies, in addition to pre and post-natal expenses and newly born baby coverage. However, the coverage amount, as well as the duration for which coverage is provided, may differ. To obtain information on maternity coverage, the patients must reach out to their insurance providers.

Questions to Ask the Gynecologist About Vaginal Delivery

Any pregnant woman scheduled for a normal vaginal delivery must ask the doctor some important questions. It is important to get some important questions addressed before the delivery to ensure preparedness. • What will happen during the delivery process?
    • How can I prepare for my vaginal delivery?
    • What does labor pain feel like?
    • How can I manage pain associated with normal vaginal delivery?
    • What are the various stages of vaginal delivery?
    • How long does normal delivery take?
    • What complications can occur before, during, or after a vaginal delivery?
    • How will you monitor the well-being of both me and my baby during labor and delivery?
    • What postpartum care and support will be provided following a vaginal delivery?
    • Are there any specific warning signs or symptoms I should watch out for after a vaginal delivery?
    • Will normal delivery be safe for my child?

    FAQs around Normal Baby Delivery

Is normal delivery possible with low amniotic fluid?

Yes. Normal delivery is possible with low amniotic fluid and does not necessitate the need for a c-section as long as the baby is healthy and growing fine. No specific amniotic fluid level is necessary for normal delivery.

What is the duration of normal delivery?

For first-time mothers, the normal delivery process, including the labor time, can take anywhere between 8 to 16 hours. The total duration, however, is subjective and may vary for all mothers.

How much pain is normal during a normal delivery?

Normal delivery can be quite painful for most women. Women giving birth through the vagina often experience strong cramps in the abdomen, groin, and back during their normal delivery, with a strong ache. The pain experienced by mothers is subjective, and while some find it excruciating, it is manageable for the rest.

When can I have intercourse after a normal delivery?

After a normal or vaginal delivery, mothers are suggested to wait for 6 to 8 weeks before resuming sex again. It is because delivery can make the vaginal tissue thin and sensitive. It is best to give the vagina, uterus, and cervix time to return to their normal size and heal before resuming sex again. It is advisable to consult with a doctor before resuming sex after a normal delivery to avoid complications.

How many stitches are necessary for normal delivery?

According to research, as many as 70% of the women who have a vaginal birth receive stitches following a normal delivery. Typically, three layers of stitches are required after a normal delivery. The number of stitches required after a normal delivery can vary depending on the requirement of the case.

How many days of hospital stay are required after normal delivery?

Most mothers are discharged within 2 to 3 days of their normal delivery after a thorough postnatal examination. However, the duration of hospital stay can differ depending on the health of the mother as well as the child.

Which is safer-normal delivery of c-section?

In general, a normal or vaginal delivery is considered safer and healthier for both the mother and the baby. A c-section delivery, on the other hand, accompanies certain risks. However, in several cases, a c-section becomes necessary, especially when there’s a risk to the health of the mother or the child.

What does labor pain feel like?

Labor pain or contractions can be quite discomforting for most mothers. They usually start as a dull ache in the lower back and abdomen. Women also feel pressure in the pelvis when in labor. The intensity of pain typically increases as the mother advances towards giving birth.

When is a normal delivery not recommended?

The doctors do not suggest a normal delivery if the baby is in a breech position or there’s an issue with the placenta previa or with the placenta. Also, if the mother has an untreated infection or open genital lesions from the herpes simplex virus, a vaginal delivery may not be the best option. Not to mention, mothers with chronic health conditions may also be required to get a C-section in place of a normal delivery.
