Recovery After Rectal Prolapse Surgery

Recovery after rectal prolapse differs for everyone but usually takes 4 to 6 weeks. Your doctor will suggest drinking lots of fluids, using stool softeners, and consuming a fiber-rich diet after surgery to avoid constipation and excessive straining that can lead to the recurrence of the rectal prolapse.

Most people can return to routine activities within 4 to 6 weeks after surgery. However, avoid lifting and strenuous exercise for at least 6 weeks after surgery. The patient will likely require one or two follow-up visits to the doctor within the first month after surgery to check that the incisions are healing well and ensure bowel movements are normal.

Post-Operative Care After Rectal Prolapse Surgery

Here are some tips to help with recovery from rectal prolapse surgery:

  • Eat a high-fiber diet with added fiber from cereal and whole grain bread, including a fiber supplement like Metamucil, Benefiber, or Psyllium.
  • Eat 5-6 small meals each day rather than 3 large meals.
  • Drink 8-10 glasses of fluid daily.
  • Limit your strenuous activities for 6 weeks. However, daily walks, climbing stairs & light jogging are encouraged.
  • Avoid activities that strain the abdominal muscles, like sit ups, sprinting, and sex. Do not lift anything over 5 kg for 6 weeks. Also, avoid any activity that causes extreme pain.
  • Do not drive for a week.
  • Avoid smoking. Smoking interferes with healing and raises the risk of complications, including hernia, pneumonia, chronic lung diseases like emphysema, lung failure, and cancer.
  • Avoid alcohol for the first week after surgery.
  • Try to manage your stress to help improve your digestive health.
  • Your bowel habits may vary for a few weeks after surgery. Frequent and/or loose stools are common since the body takes time to adjust after an operation. Avoid foods that seem to cause diarrhea or gas.
  • Frequent stools may cause irritation of the skin around the anus. Avoid toilet paper as it tends to irritate the skin. If you are experiencing discharge or irritation, take a sitz bath for 5-10 minutes after bowel movements.
  • Do not put salt or scented products in the sitz bath water until the wound has healed completely. These could irritate the wound.
  • Do not submerge your incision for 2 weeks after surgery. If you have a dressing on your wound, leave it in place for 5 days or until it peels off.
  • Keep your wound clean and dry. Once the dressing is removed, you can leave it open unless there is a discharge. Plain dry gauze may be placed over the wound to absorb any discharge.
  • Schedule follow-up appointments with your surgeon
  • Make lifestyle changes like losing weight, maintaining a balanced diet, etc.

Are you going through any of these symptoms?

Diet To Consume During Recovery

The list of foods to consume during recovery includes the following:

  1. Water (no carbonation)
  2. Low-acidic fruits and vegetables like carrots, corn, bananas, potatoes, etc. These foods contain magnesium, which allows muscles and nerves to perform properly.
  3. Citrus fruits like lemon, sweet orange, grapefruit, etc. These fruits are rich in vitamin C, which is known to help in soft tissue and collagen repair. Vitamin C has also been shown to help reduce the chance of nerves getting over-sensitized.
  4. Beans: Beans are packed with iron, vital in creating new blood cells. You need new blood cells to help you bounce back after a surgical procedure.
  5. Omega-3 fatty acids: Fish oil, flax seed, and nuts contain omega-3 fatty acids, which reduce swelling in the anal region.
  6. Supplement with vitamin D.
  7. Lean protein and eggs: Eggs and lean meat have proteins, which help boost the immune system and support recovery.
  8. Whole grains: Whole grains are a great source of fiber, vitamins, carbohydrates, and minerals. They promote bowel movement and help improve digestion after surgery. Oatmeal, whole-wheat bread, and whole-grain cereals should be added to the after-surgery diet chart.
  9. Almonds: Almonds are rich in vitamin E. This nutrient is believed to be effective in healing wounds and building scar tissue.
  10. Seafood:  Zinc is one of the most vital nutrients for energy and healing after surgery. Seafood contains enough zinc to ensure that you have a smooth recovery.

Foods To Avoid During Recovery

Here are certain foods to avoid to ensure a smooth recovery after your rectal prolapse surgery:

  • alcoholic beverages
  • steak, or hard-to-digest meat
  • sugary sweets
  • whole grain crackers or crackers with seeds
  • raw vegetables
  • legumes
  • brown rice
  • dried fruit, such as raisins, dates, prunes (dried plums), figs, apricots and peaches.
  • coconut
  • spices, such as garlic, curry, and red pepper
  • highly seasoned foods
  • popcorn
  • fried food

Exercises/Asanas To Recover After Rectal Prolapse Surgery

Here is a list of exercises/asanas that can be beneficial for you after your rectal prolapse surgery:

  • Pranayama – All pelvic floor functions are associated with breathing. With every breath, pelvic floor muscles move up and down in coordination which can help strengthen the muscles. Therefore, breathing exercises can be highly valuable for recovery after rectal prolapse surgery. In addition, alternate nostril breathing, abdominal-diaphragmatic breathing, and bee’s breath are alternative yoga breathing techniques that may be useful.
  • Mula Bandha – Mula Bandha is a yoga exercise that enhances recovery after surgery. The exercise involves engaging the pelvic floor muscles and the deep core muscles.
  • Tadasana – Tadasana, or mountain pose, is a beneficial posture that strengthens the pelvic floor and deep core abdominal muscles to support the pelvic organs, including the bowel and rectum.
  • Legs Up-the-Wall Pose (Viparita Karani)- This asana can raise circulation around the anus while relieving discomfort and irritation.
  • Kegel exercises- Kegel exercises focus on strengthening the pelvic floor muscles. Medical experts believe a strong pelvic floor provides better support for the pelvic organs, prevents prolapse from worsening, and enhances recovery after rectal prolapse surgery.
  • Vajrasana or The Adamant Pose – Rectal prolapse can happen due to constipation. Therefore, it is essential to perform asanas that treat and prevent constipation. Vajrasana is one such asana that is beneficial in treating various medical conditions, such as chronic constipation, stomach disorders, and digestive problems.

Exercises/Asanas To Avoid For A Better Recovery

Here is a list of exercises/asanas to avoid after your rectal prolapse surgery:

  • Double Leg Lift
  • Boat Poses
  • Plank
  • Uddiyana bandha
  • Deep squat poses – Avoid poses involving deep squats to relieve pressure on the pelvic floor, like Noose and Garland Pose.
  • Forward bends with wide legs – Avoid or modify wide-leg forward bends since it increases pelvic floor pressure.
  • Upper body weight bearing – Weight bearing through the upper limbs increases downward pressure on the pelvic floor; therefore, it is best to avoid upper body weight-bearing exercises.

Medications To Take During Recovery

  • Take pain medicine every three to four hours when needed.
  • Take stool softener as long as you are taking the pain medicine. Colace (Docusate sodium) 100 mg twice daily is the advised stool softener.
  • Take fiber supplements, like Metamucil, Konsyl, Fibercon, or Citrucel, as directed on the package.
  • If two days pass without a bowel movement, take a tablespoon of milk of magnesia and repeat in 8 to 10 hours if you have not had a bowel movement. If you still see no results after three days, take two Dulcolax tablets. If this does not work within 12 hours, call your healthcare provider.

Lifestyle Changes Required To Ensure A Proper Recovery

Some lifestyle changes to follow after rectal prolapse surgery include:

  • Perform regular exercise with moderate intensity (for at least 30 minutes).
  • Maintain healthy body weight
  • Drink enough fluids during the day.
  • Eat only good quality foods.
  • Stop eating as soon as you feel full.
  • Take regular showers
  • Stop smoking
  • Limit alcohol intake
