  • Rhinoplasty Surgery Recovery- An Overview

Rhinoplasty is one of the most complex surgeries. And the recovery after reshaping the nose is also longer than other cosmetic procedures. Typically, it takes a month for the patient to resume most activities, but the complete recovery takes around a year or so. Throughout this period, the patient needs to be very careful and maintain optimal health to get the desired results from the surgery.

Depending on the technique used for rhinoplasty, i.e., open or closed, the extent of modifications, and the individual healing abilities, the duration of recovery will vary for each patient. The doctor usually gives detailed instructions to ensure that the patient doesn’t experience complications during the period and recovers as soon as possible.

    Month-to-Month Recovery Timeline After Rhinoplasty

The initial days after rhinoplasty are the most uncomfortable ones as the patient will have difficulty breathing through the nose and won’t be able to smell anything. The patient will start to feel better in the upcoming days. The recovery timeline is explained below in detail.

    First Month:

    • Immediately after surgery, the patient will have a splint inside or outside the nose to protect it and support the bone and cartilage in place. This will remain in place for about a week.
    • The patient will experience pain, discomfort, and swelling around the nose, eyes, and face. The surgeon will prescribe pain medication to help manage this.
    • The nasal splint will be removed after the first week.
    • The doctor will advise when it’s safe to resume work after the surgery. Most patients get permission in the 2nd week. But in some cases, the doctor may advise to exercise caution.
    • Facial swelling will dissipate after 10-14 days of surgery, but the swelling and bruising will take some time.

    Second Month:

    • Mild pain or discomfort might still be present, but it should be manageable with over-the-counter pain medication.
    • The patient still needs to avoid any strenuous activities or exercise that could raise blood pressure or lead to a nose injury.
    • It’s okay to resume wearing glasses or sunglasses, but the patient should use a glasses guard or tape to keep them from resting on the nose directly.
    • Attend follow-up appointments with the surgeon to monitor the progress and ensure proper healing.

    3-7 Months:

    • Within these months, most of the swelling will subside, and the patient will be able to see the improved nose shape.
    • Residual swelling and minor discomfort might still be present, but it will be minimal.
    • The patient can resume normal daily activities but should still avoid any contact sports or activities that could potentially damage the nose.
    • The doctor will approve wearing makeup or using skin care products around the nose, but the patient should be gentle and avoid applying pressure to the area.
    • Follow-ups are still necessary during this period so the doctor can monitor the healing and determine whether the nose shape will be as expected.

    8-12 Months:

    • By this time, the majority of the swelling should be gone, and the patient will be able to see the final results of rhinoplasty.
    • The patient can resume all activities, including exercises and sports activities, with caution.
    • No scarring or other signs of surgery will be noticeable at this point.
    • It’s also important to have regular follow-up consultations during this period to analyze the nose’s symmetry and shape.

Are you going through any of these symptoms?

    Diet to Follow After Rhinoplasty

Diet is an essential part of recovery after rhinoplasty surgery. The surgeon will recommend eating a balanced diet to accelerate the pace of recovery. The patient also needs to avoid certain foods during this period.

Here are some dietary tips to follow after undergoing nose reshaping surgery.

    • After the surgery, it’ll be better to start by drinking liquids. The anesthesia effects might induce nausea and vomiting, and eating solid foods can make it worse.
    • Start taking soft meals that are lukewarm and almost tasteless, such as yogurt, bulgur, soups, etc., a few days after the surgery.
    • Include protein-rich foods, such as lean meat, chicken, egg, fish, dairy products, beans, lentils, nuts, soy products, etc., in the diet. Protein is crucial for recovery as it provides the amino acids necessary for tissue repair and wound healing.
    • Add healthy fats to the diet to provide enough energy to the body and improve the immune system function. Such fats are olive oil, avocado, and nuts.
    • Fiber is another important nutrient that the body will need during recovery. Constipation is very common after surgeries due to the drugs prescribed, lack of mobility, and limited diet. Due to this, there is a risk that the patient might strain while passing stools, which can put a strain on the nose, which should be avoided at all costs. It’ll be best to eat soft fruits, different types of berries, oatmeal, bread, whole grains, and well-cooked vegetables like carrots to get plenty of fiber to prevent constipation.
    • Eat foods with anti-inflammatory properties to manage and reduce the swelling and bruising on the nose. Include foods like leafy vegetables, apples, citrus fruits, pineapples, caper bush, red onion, etc., in the diet plan.
    • Water intake should also be ideal after surgery as it’ll help to flush out the toxins from the body and prevent dehydration which can affect the healing abilities.
    • Avoid consuming alcohol and caffeine after rhinoplasty for at least a month. Alcohol acts as a blood thinner, which can increase the risk of bleeding and hematoma in the nose. And caffeine intake leads to high blood pressure and causes similar problems.
    • After surgery, it’s strictly advised to avoid eating chewy foods as it causes excessive nose movements and put pressure on the bone and cartilage.
    • Keep the salt intake minimal after surgery, as high sodium levels lead to water retention, which results in nasal inflammation.

The dietary instructions will be different for each patient. Therefore, it’ll be best to talk to the doctor regarding any doubts or concerns about food intake.

    Lifestyle Changes Recommended After Rhinoplasty

Undergoing rhinoplasty requires a long commitment, as recovery takes around a year or so. And during this period, the patient needs to make several lifestyle changes. Here are some lifestyle changes that are generally recommended to patients after rhinoplasty:

    • Avoid strenuous activities, such as exercise or heavy lifting, for at least 4-6 weeks after surgery. This is to prevent any undue pressure or strain on the nasal area that could lead to bleeding or swelling. In some patients, the duration may be longer depending on their individual healing abilities.
    • Do not engage in contact sports, such as football or basketball, for at least 6 weeks after surgery. Such activities have a higher risk of injuries which can damage the nose and compromise the results of the surgery.
    • Get ample rest in the initial days after surgery and sleep well to promote healing. Sleep with the head elevated using pillows or a recliner to improve breathing and reduce swelling. It’ll be safe to sleep in the normal position after 2-3 weeks.
    • Do not wear glasses under any circumstance. Wearing eyeglasses should be avoided as they put pressure on the nose bone and cartilage. The pressure may alter the nose shape and structure and compromise the surgery results.
    • Try to keep alcohol intake minimal and avoid smoking entirely before and after the surgery. Alcohol and tobacco products can significantly impair the healing process and increase the chances of complications.
    • Sun exposure is also bad for the nose after the surgery. It can increase swelling and inflammation in the treated area and also cause hyperpigmentation or darkening. Wear sunscreen throughout the day regularly without fail and reapply as necessary to prevent sun damage.

These minor changes in lifestyle can benefit patients in every aspect. By following these instructions strictly and carefully, the patient will be able to recover quickly and get optimal results with minimal complications.

Dos & Don’ts After Undergoing Rhinoplasty Surgery

Throughout the recovery period, the patient should follow the below-mentioned dos and don’ts to ensure a smooth and successful recovery.

    Dos

    • Follow the surgeon’s post-operative instructions regarding medication, wound care, and activity restrictions.
    • Take medications as prescribed by the doctor to manage the pain, discomfort, swelling, and bruising.
    • Complete the course of antibiotics prescribed by the doctor to prevent infection after surgery.
    • Keep the head elevated while sleeping or resting to manage the swelling and prevent fluid buildup in the nose.
    • Use cold compresses to reduce the swelling and discomfort. The doctor will provide instructions on how to use the cold compresses.
    • Follow the surgeon’s instructions to clean the nose and change the dressings.
    • Drink plenty of water and other fluids to promote healing.
    • Use the saline nasal spray as recommended by the surgeon to keep nasal passages moist and prevent scab formation.
    • Notify the surgeon immediately if any unusual symptoms, such as severe pain, bleeding, or fever, are present.
    • Wear sunscreen while going out or cover the nose to prevent direct contact with sunlight.

    Don’ts

    • Don’t touch or pick at the surgical area.
    • Don’t blow the nose; try to avoid areas and things that may induce sneezing.
    • Don’t smoke or use tobacco products as it impairs healing.
    • Don’t drink alcohol as it can affect liver function and the immune system, which aids in healing.
    • Don’t engage in strenuous activity and contact sports which have a high risk of injury.
    • Don’t wear glasses without consulting the surgeon.
    • Don’t expose the surgical area to sunlight or tanning beds.
    • Don’t take any medications or supplements without consulting the surgeon.
    • Don’t submerge the face in a pool or hot tub for at least two weeks after surgery.
    • Don’t wear clothing that needs to be pulled over the head, as this can bump the nose and cause discomfort.
    • Don’t use makeup or skincare products on or around the surgical area without a doctor’s approval.
    • Don’t skip follow-up appointments or ignore any concerns or questions about the recovery.
