What is Sinus Infection?

A sinus infection, also known as sinusitis or rhinosinusitis, usually occurs when the nasal cavities become infected, swollen, and inflamed. It can develop as a result of fluid buildup in the sinuses, which allows bacteria and other germs to grow.  Sinusitis is usually caused by a virus and often lasts even after other upper respiratory symptoms are gone. In some cases, bacteria or, rarely, fungi may cause a sinus infection. The treatment option for sinus infection depends on the severity of the symptoms.

Types Of Sinuses

There are 4 types of sinuses, including:

  1. Frontal sinuses: The frontal sinuses are two hollow cavities located in the frontal bone of the skull, just above the eyes. They are an important part of the respiratory system, providing insulation to the skull and helping to reduce the weight of the head. They are lined with mucous membranes, which help to filter the air as it passes through them and also produce the mucous that helps lubricate the nasal passages. The frontal sinuses also act as a resonance chamber for the voice, helping to give it a fuller, richer sound. Treatment may involve antibiotics, decongestants, and nasal irrigation with saline solution. In severe cases, balloon sinuplasty or endoscopic frontal recess dissection may be recommended.
  2. Maxillary sinuses: The maxillary sinuses are two air-filled cavities located in the bones of the face, just above the upper teeth. They are lined with mucous membranes and are connected to the nasal cavity. These sinuses help to lighten the skull and reduce its weight, as well as to increase the resonance of the voice. They are prone to infection and can cause facial pain when inflamed. Maxillary antrostomy is a surgical procedure used to open the maxillary sinus cavity. This procedure is typically used to improve sinus ventilation and drainage when the natural opening is blocked.
  3. Ethmoid sinuses: The ethmoid sinuses are a pair of small, air-filled cavities located between the eyes and behind the bridge of the nose. They are lined with mucous membranes and are connected to the nasal cavity. The ethmoid sinuses have multiple functions, including humidifying the air, trapping foreign particles, and helping to regulate the temperature and moisture of the air. They are also important for the sense of smell. When ethmoid sinus gets infected or inflamed, treatment involving antibiotics, decongestants, and anti-inflammatory medications may be suggested. In severe cases, the doctors may suggest an ethmoidectomy.
  4. Sphenoid sinuses: The sphenoid sinuses are air-filled cavities located in the sphenoid bone in the skull. They are situated in the base of the skull, just behind the ethmoid sinuses. They are generally triangular in shape and open into the nasal cavity. They are an important part of the sinonasal system, helping to humidify and filter air. In addition, they can help to reduce the weight of the skull. When sphenoid sinuses get infected or inflamed, doctors may recommend antibiotics or decongestants, but in chronic sphenoid sinusitis, Endoscopic transnasal sphenoidectomy is recommended.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Sinus Infection

Diagnosis of sinus infection

A healthcare provider usually suggests the following diagnostic tests to diagnose the sinus infection:

  • Nasal swabs: In this test, the healthcare provider uses a soft-tipped stick to get a fluid sample from the nose. They’ll test it for viruses or other germs that might be causing your symptoms.
  • Imaging: In some cases, healthcare providers suggest a computed tomography (CT) scan to understand better what’s happening inside your sinuses.
  • Allergy testing: It is usually suggested if you have chronic sinusitis. It helps in testing the allergies that can trigger it.
  • Biopsy: In some rare cases, a healthcare provider may take a tissue sample from the nose for testing.

Treatment of sinus infection

Some of the common treatment options for sinus infection include

Over-the-counter (OTC) medications

A doctor usually suggests a nasal decongestant spray, such as oxymetazoline, to help relieve sinus infection symptoms in the short term. However, you should only use it for three days at a time. Long-term use may exacerbate your symptoms. The symptoms of nasal congestion can be relieved with steroid nasal sprays like fluticasone (Flonase) or triamcinolone without the risk of rebound symptoms from prolonged use. If you have allergies, OTC antihistamines and decongestants might be helpful for sinus infections. Some common options include:

  • Sudafed
  • Cetirizine (Zyrtec)
  • Fexofenadine (Allegra)
  • Loratadine (Claritin)

You must avoid decongestants if you have high blood pressure, prostate issues, glaucoma, and sleep difficulties. You must consult your healthcare provider to understand the best option for you.

Nasal irrigation

If you have chronic rhinosinusitis and other types of sinus infections, then flushing out your nostrils may help. You can practice moving saline solution through nasal passages to clear out mucus and flush out debris and allergens.

Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS)

Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is usually suggested in serious conditions. It is a minimally invasive surgery. During the procedures, a doctor uses nasal endoscopes (thin tubes with lights and lenses) to ease the sinus symptoms without making incisions in or around the nose.
