Squint Surgery Recovery- An Overview

Squint surgery can be performed on children or adults as required. And the recovery period is different for the patient, depending on his/her age. In general, patients need around 3 to 12 weeks to recover. But in some cases, the recovery may extend to 6 months if the surgery was extensive.

The eye and brain coordination will improve gradually after the surgery. The alignment of the eyes will also change throughout the healing process. And it may take several months before the final alignment is achieved. The eye specialist may also recommend vision therapy to teach the brain and eyes to work together and correct the misalignment.

Recommended Lifestyle Changes to Make After Squint Eye Surgery

After strabismus surgery, it is important to make some lifestyle changes to aid in the recovery process and prevent any complications. Here are some recommendations:

  • Avoid strenuous activities for at least a few weeks after surgery. Also, avoid physical activities that may put pressure on the eyes or cause strain.
  • Give proper rest to the eyes and avoid using them for extended periods, such as reading, watching TV, or using the computer.
  • Avoid rubbing the eyes as it can cause irritation and may lead to infection.
  • Wear sunglasses when going out as eyes will be more sensitive to light. Protect the eyes from bright sunlight and other sources of light.
  • Avoid driving until the doctor approves, as the vision may be blurry, and the eyes may be sensitive to light.
  • Quit smoking entirely, as smoking slows down the healing process and increases the risk of infection.
  • Limit alcohol consumption as it causes dehydration and slows down the healing process.

The doctor will provide detailed guidance regarding lifestyle changes that are necessary to get the best results.

Are you going through any of these symptoms?

Recovery Timeline After Squint Surgery

Here is a general timeline of what to expect during the recovery period:

Immediately after surgery:

  • The patient will likely feel groggy and disoriented for a few hours after the surgery due to the effects of anesthesia or sedatives administered during the procedure.
  • The eyes will be covered with a patch or gauze to protect them and minimize swelling.
  • The patient may experience mild discomfort or soreness around the eyes, which can be managed with prescribed medication as directed by the doctor.
  • The doctor may also prescribe antibiotic eye drops to prevent infection.

1-2 Days After the Surgery:

  • The doctor will remove the patch or gauze from the eyes and check the alignment of the eyes.
  • The patient may experience some double vision or blurred vision during this time as the brain adjusts to the new alignment of the eyes.
  • The eyes may be red and swollen, and there might be some tearing or discharge.
  • The doctor will likely recommend avoiding strenuous activity and heavy lifting for the next few days to allow the eyes to heal.

1-2 Weeks After Surgery:

  • The eyes may still be slightly red and swollen, but any pain or discomfort should subside.
  • The patient may still experience some double vision or blurred vision, but this should improve as the brain adapts to the new alignment.
  • The doctor may recommend avoiding driving or operating heavy machinery until the vision has fully stabilized.
  • The patient may be able to return to work or school but should avoid activities that could strain the eyes or cause excessive sweating.

3-4 Weeks After Surgery:

  • The eyes should be nearly fully healed by this time, and any residual redness or swelling should have subsided.
  • The vision should be stable, and the patient should no longer experience double vision or blurred vision.
  • The doctor may recommend to start doing eye exercises to strengthen your eye muscles and improve vision.
  • The patient may be able to resume normal activities but should still avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for a few more weeks.

6-8 Weeks After Surgery:

  • The eyes should be fully healed by this time, and any residual swelling or redness will be gone.
  • The doctor will suggest continuing the eye exercises to maintain the strength and alignment of eye muscles.
  • The patient should be able to resume all normal activities, including strenuous exercise and heavy lifting.

In some instances, the recovery period may be longer than 8 weeks for some patients. For a smooth and successful recovery, it’s important that the patient follows the doctor’s instructions.

Diet to Improve Eye Health After Squint Surgery

Typically, there are no dietary restrictions or recommendations after squint surgery. However, it’ll be beneficial for patients to include foods that are good for eye health and avoid foods that can affect the healing process.

  • Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables: Fruits and vegetables are rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that are essential for eye health. Leafy green vegetables like spinach, kale, and broccoli are particularly beneficial.
  • Include omega-3 fatty acids in your diet: Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for eye health, and they can be found in oily fish like salmon, tuna, and sardines. If fish is not an option, the patient can also consider getting omega-3s from walnuts, chia seeds, flaxseeds, and soybeans.
  • Avoid processed foods: Processed foods are often high in unhealthy fats, sugars, and sodium, which can be harmful to your overall health, including your eye health.
  • Drink plenty of water: Staying hydrated is important to prevent dryness in the eyes. Aim to drink at least 8 glasses of water per day.
  • Limit alcohol and caffeine: Alcohol and caffeine can dehydrate your body, which can be harmful to your eyes. Limit the intake of these substances, and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

The brain and eyes function in sync when they are fueled with foods that are rich in vitamins A, C, and E, lutein, zeaxanthin, omega 3s, beta carotene, zinc, fiber, and antioxidants. A proper diet combined with eye exercises will improve eye control after squint surgery.

Exercise to Improve Brain-Eye Coordination After Squint Eye Surgery

After squint eye surgery, it is important to perform eye exercises that can help improve brain-eye coordination. These exercises can help strengthen the eye muscles, improve eye movement, and promote better eye alignment. Here are some exercises that may be recommended by the eye doctor or vision therapist:

  • Smooth Pursuit Eye Movements: This exercise involves following a moving object with the eyes without moving the head. Start by holding an object like a pen or a finger about arm’s length away from the face. Move it smoothly from side to side, up and down, and in circles. Try to follow the object with eyes without moving the head.
  • Saccadic Eye Movements: This exercise involves moving the eyes quickly from one object to another. Start by placing two objects like pens or fingers about 10-20 cm apart. Look at one object for a few seconds, and then quickly shift the gaze to the other object.
  • Eye Convergence Exercises: This exercise involves focusing on an object as it moves closer to the face. Start by holding an object like a pen or a finger about arm’s length away from the face. Slowly move the object toward the face while keeping the eyes focused on it. Stop when the object is about 5 cm away from the face, and hold the gaze on it for a few seconds.
  • Eye Relaxation Exercises: This exercise involves closing the eyes and relaxing the eye muscles. Sit comfortably with the eyes closed, and take deep breaths. Inhale and exhale slowly. With inhalation, the muscles in the body, including the eye muscles, tense up. And with exhalation, the muscles relax.

Once the eyes heal, do each of these exercises for 10-15 minutes per day. However, if any of these exercises cause pain or discomfort in the eye, stop immediately and consult the doctor.

Dos & Don’ts To Follow After Squint Surgery

After squint surgery, it’s important to follow some dos and don’ts to ensure proper healing and to reduce the risk of complications.

Dos:

  • Take all the medications prescribed by your doctor as instructed.
  • Use eye drops and ointments as prescribed by the doctor to prevent infection and reduce inflammation.
  • Use ice packs or cold compresses as instructed by the doctor to reduce swelling.
  • Keep the eye area clean and dry.
  • Wear an eye patch or shield to protect the eye from injury.
  • Rest as much as possible and avoid activities that can strain the eyes, such as reading or watching TV.
  • Attend all follow-up appointments with the doctor to monitor the progress.

Don’t:

  • Rub or touch the eyes, even if they feel itchy or irritated.
  • Get water in the eyes or go swimming until the doctor says it’s safe.
  • Expose the eyes to smoke or other irritants.
  • Lift heavy objects or perform strenuous activities until the doctor approves.
  • Apply makeup or other products near the eyes until the eyes heal.
  • Drive until the doctor gives permission to do so.
