What Are Teeth Clips?

Teeth Clips is another name for ‘Dental Braces’. These are dental appliances that are used for treating a range of conditions, including crooked teeth, misaligned teeth, crowded teeth, malocclusion (bad bites), etc. These dental clips put mild pressure on the teeth and help them return to their normal position over the passage of time.

Types Of Teeth Clips Or Braces

Traditionally, patients would feel embarrassed wearing braces as they were quite apparent. Additionally, they would fear pain and injuries inside the mouth. However, with advancements in medicine, newer braces that are less noticeable have become enormously in demand. Teeth clips or braces are categorized into several types, including:

Metal braces: Traditionally, braces were made of metal. These braces are still used. In the case of metal braces, the brackets are attached to the front of the teeth, and flexible wires hold the brackets together.

Ceramic braces: Ceramic braces are similar to metal braces, but they are generally made of ‘tooth-colored’ ceramic, unlike silver metal brackets or wires. They are less noticeable than metal braces.

Self-ligating braces: Self-ligating braces come with a built-in system for fastening the archwire to the brackets. They do not require the use of elastic ties or metal wires.

Lingual braces: Lingual braces are quite similar to conventional metal braces, but they are placed on the back side of your teeth or the lingual side of the teeth. This makes them nearly invisible.

Clear aligners: Clear aligners are the most advanced teeth clips or braces. They are transparent trays that are made out of special material. They work exactly like any other type of tooth clip or braces, but aren’t apparent like traditional braces.

The choice of the type of teeth clips to use for treatment is upon the orthodontists. They examine the patient’s overall oral health before suggesting which type of teeth clips would work best for them.

Teeth Clip Placement Procedure

Teeth clips or dental braces are generally placed in the following steps:

  • During the teeth clip placement procedure, the doctors use a cheek retractor to keep the teeth dry and visible throughout.
  • The doctors then polish the teeth, which allows them to bond properly. In the next step, the teeth are air-dried.
  • The doctor then uses a conditioner on the front surface of the teeth. This is done for 30 seconds to prepare the teeth for bonding the brackets. The conditioner is then cleaned off, and the teeth are once again dried.
  • In the next step, the doctor places an adhesive primer on the teeth, which helps strengthen the bonding process. Then, cement is placed on the back of the brackets, and they are then placed in the predetermined areas.
  • After placing the brackets, the excess cement is removed, and a high-intensity light is used to harden the brackets into place. Then, the retractor is removed, and the doctors carefully place dental archwires.

Placing the teeth clips, including bonding the brackets and applying arch wires, can take 10 to 20 minutes. The duration, however, can differ based on the condition of the teeth and the total time it takes to put the components in the correct place to treat a specific condition.

After Teeth Clip Placement

When the teeth clip treatment is complete, the orthodontist will remove the brackets and the bonding agent. Then, they will clean and polish your teeth. Additionally, if they suspect gum issues, they will treat them as well. It is normal for patients to experience some sensitivity in the teeth for a couple of weeks after removal. However, it generally subsides in some time.

Retainers may be placed after treatment to prevent teeth from returning to their position. Patients are required to wear the retainers for some time, as directed by the orthodontist. Typically patients have to wear the retainers 24 hours a day for the initial two months after treatment. Then, they may have to wear them for another 6 to 12 months, but only at night. Taking care or retainers and maintaining complete oral hygiene is just as important as it is with braces.

Care For Teeth Clips

The purpose of teeth clips is not only to help you get those perfect teeth and a beautiful smile but also to help you maintain good dental hygiene and avoid potential infections and diseases. Once the teeth clips are placed, it is important to follow a proper oral care routine, or your teeth can get stained, or you might develop gum diseases. We have listed some tips that can help you maintain proper oral hygiene after teeth clip placement:

  • Brush regularly, twice a day, for two minutes. Use fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled brush. Make sure you brush below the teeth clip wires as well to get everything out.
  • Flossing helps in removing food particles lodged in the cracks between the teeth, which the brush can’t help remove. You can use mouthwash after flossing to get rid of any  remaining bacteria or plague.
  • Make sure you’re careful while choosing your meals. You must avoid eating hard, sticky, sugary, or crunchy foods. Instead, you should prefer eating soft foods that wouldn’t cause the teeth clips to break.
  • Keep in touch with your orthodontist. If you face any issues, get them addressed in time.

Benefits Of Teeth Clips

Teeth clips or braces, including invisible teeth clips, can be beneficial in more ways than one. Here are some ways in which you can benefit from teeth clips:

  • Maintaining oral hygiene can be difficult for patients with teeth gaps or overcrowded teeth, as the teeth are generally bent or rotated. Since teeth clips help in enhancing the alignment of teeth, maintaining dental hygiene becomes easy.
  • Teeth clips help in treating dental misalignment and repositioning the jaw. This helps in making the teeth symmetrical and enhancing the patient’s smile.
  • Teeth clips enhance the alignment and positioning of the teeth and make functions like chewing and biting much easier.
  • Poor oral hygiene caused due to poor alignment of teeth can cause dental issues such as tooth decay and gum diseases. Teeth clips help in improving dental hygiene and preventing these issues.
  • Protruding teeth can put you at an increased risk of dental injuries. Teeth clips or braces help in shifting the teeth to their original place and prevent potential injuries.
  • Individuals with crooked teeth are at an increased risk of temporomandibular joint disease or TMJ. This is because crooked teeth can put extra pressure on your jawbone and jaw muscles. Teeth clips help in straightening the teeth and preventing the risk of TMJ.
  • Crooked teeth make individuals more susceptible to lisps or other speech disorders. Teeth clips can help prevent speech issues by treating the underlying issue.
  • Invisible teeth clips or aligners help align the teeth without affecting the person’s appearance during the course of treatment.

Candidates For Teeth Clips

Teeth clips or dental braces are considered effective for treating a range of dental conditions. Generally, patients with the following issues require teeth clips or braces:

  • Having crooked or overcrowded teeth
  • Frequent tongue bites or cuts
  • Having difficulty flossing and brushing due to crooked teeth
  • Facing difficulty pronouncing some sounds as the tongue is positioned under the teeth.
  • Clicking of jaws while chewing or right after waking up.
  • Experiencing fatigue on the jawline while or after chewing.
  • Having low self-esteem because of misaligned teeth or other dental concerns.

When are teeth clips not suggested?

What is the best age to get teeth clips?

There is no age limit to getting braces, and no best age either. Patients can get teeth clips whenever they want. However, some believe that it is best to get teeth clips between the ages of 9 to 14 years old.

Do teeth clips cause pain?

Teeth clips can cause some pain or discomfort, but it generally subsides with time. Some patients may also feel that the teeth clips are rubbing or poking into the insides of the mouth. This pain generally vanishes within a week of placement. It is best to ask your dentist to give you tips on how you can manage this pain.

How long do you need to wear teeth clips?

Usually, patients are required to wear fixed braces for 18 to 24 months. In more severe dental cases, the patient may have to keep the teeth clips on for up to 3 years. Your orthodontist will be able to tell you better for how long you will be required to wear the teeth clips or braces after assessing your condition.

What foods to avoid with teeth clips?

How often do I need to see an orthodontist for checkups?

It is advisable to see an orthodontist every six to eight weeks after teeth clip or braces placement. This will help you keep a check on the progress of the treatment and your overall oral health.

Taking care of braces is important, or they may break. If you break your braces repeatedly, your treatment will last longer. Additionally, you must maintain good oral hygiene, as  poor oral health can result in other complications that may delay the results.

What are the alternatives to teeth clips or braces?

Teeth clips of different types – metallic, ceramic, or invisible are generally considered the most trusted method of treating various dental conditions. However, in some cases, surgeries such as teeth straightening surgery, etc., are considered effective alternatives for teeth clips.
