  • What is tonsillitis?

Tonsillitis refers to the inflammation of the tonsils – skin pads that are located at the back of the throat on both sides. This condition is very common and may occur occasionally or repeatedly in children. The role of tonsils is to clean the airways and prevent infection by acting as filters and humidifiers. Bacterial or viral infections are the leading cause which might get cured with tonsillitis medicines at the initial stage. The bacteria causing tonsillitis can also cause tonsil stones, which are also known as “tonsilloliths.” It is a skin lymph made up in your tonsils. Bad breath is the main symptom of tonsil stones.

Are you going through any of these symptoms?

    Types of Tonsillitis

There are 3 types of tonsillitis, and the exact treatment of tonsillitis depends on its cause:

Acute: When the infection lasts up to 2 weeks.

Recurrent: When the infection occurs frequently.

Chronic: When the infection lasts for several weeks and does not respond to conservative treatment.

    When is tonsillitis surgery required?

Tonsils are soft tissue masses located at the back of your mouth. They are a part of your immune system that filter inhaled air to prevent the risk of external infections. When the tonsils get infected, they become swollen and painful, and require treatment. Here’s when tonsil removal surgery becomes important:

    • If you have a chronic throat infection that has lasted 3 months. Or, your infection keeps recurring despite treatment.
    • Bad breath that doesn’t fade away because of pus/abscess collected near tonsils.
    • Sleep apnea due to blockage of nasal passageways caused by swollen tonsils.
    • Tonsil stones formed due to the collection of food particles, dust or mucus and medications are working on it.

What happens in tonsil surgery or tonsillectomy?

    Diagnosis

Before the procedure, your surgeon may suggest some diagnostic tests to examine the severity of the infection and to be assured that you are the right candidate for tonsillectomy. Here are some tests your surgeon may prescribe:

    • Blood test
    • Throat culture test
    • Hemoglobin test
    • Blood count or antibodies test

    Procedure

As soon as your diagnostic tests are complete and the reports are ready, your surgeon will assess the results and suggest the best treatment for you. Usually, tonsillectomy is a day care procedure which is performed under general anesthesia. The different types of tonsil removal procedures are as follows:

    • Radiofrequency tonsillectomy: It is a laser procedure in which the tonsils are removed using a focused, high-energy radiofrequency beam. It is also known as radiofrequency tonsil ablation.
    • Harmonic scalpel tonsillectomy: A harmonic scalpel cuts the inflamed tonsils through vibration energy. It generates heat and friction, leading to protein denaturation and dissection of the tonsils.
    • Electrocautery or cauterization tonsillectomy: In this procedure, the surgeon uses low-energy electrocautery to remove the inflamed tonsils. It is one of the oldest and most conventional methods for tonsil removal.
    • Cold knife dissection tonsillectomy: A cold knife dissection is the traditional open surgery for tonsil removal. The surgeon uses a ‘cold’ or sharp knife to cut the tonsils and their capsules from the surrounding tissues.

How to prepare for tonsillitis treatment?

If you are going to receive tonsillitis treatment, you have to take some precautions to be prepared for the treatment, including:

    • Take all the medications on time as prescribed by the doctor.
    • Avoid taking blood thinning supplements like aspirin, ibuprofen etc. These drugs can cause excessive bleeding during the surgery.
    • Avoid smoking and stop alcohol or tobacco consumption.
    • Avoid eating or drinking anything for at least 8 hours before the surgery in order to avoid anesthesia-related complications. Take very little water with your medicine if you must take it.
    • Make sure that your ENT surgeon is fully aware of your medical history, genetic issues, the allergies you have, bleeding disorders, etc.
    • Bring someone with you on the day of surgery.
    • Keep all the documents handy such as your identity proof, insurance documents, etc.

How to recover after tonsillitis surgery?

Usually, complete recovery after tonsillectomy takes around 15 days. There are a number of factors that affect the speed of your recovery after tonsillectomy, including the type of procedure you underwent, your body’s ability to heal and whether or not you experienced complications.

The following suggestions can help boost your recovery and make sure you return to normal life as soon as possible.

    • Drink plenty of water to keep your throat hydrated and avoid swelling.
    • Avoid hard foods like nuts, corn or fried products that can scratch the surgical wound and may lead to complications after the procedure.
    • Eat soft and healthy foods that are easy to swallow like boiled vegetables, bananas, avocados, ice cream, boiled eggs, mashed potatoes, yogurt, cottage cheese, pudding etc.
    • Take proper care of your wounds and take medications as prescribed by your doctor.
    • Do not miss your follow-up appointments.
    • Traveling long distances should be avoided for at least two weeks. It is best to consult your surgeon before beginning the process if it can’t be delayed.

Risks and complications associated with tonsillitis treatment

Tonsillectomy is quite a safe procedure, but it does have some risks and complications associated with it. Some possible risks are as follows:

    • The reverse effect of anesthesia: The surgeon uses anesthesia to sedate the patient during the procedure. Anesthesia can cause some issues like severe headache, vomiting, dizziness etc.
    • Swelling in the mouth: Swelling of the tongue after the procedure is common but if it gets intense it may cause breathing problems.
    • Excessive bleeding during the surgery: This is a rare occurrence, and should be treated as soon as possible. It may also require a longer hospital stay if severe bleeding occurs during the surgery.
    • Bleeding during the recovery process: Abscesses and bleeding can occur during the healing process, especially if scabs are removed prematurely.
    • Infection: An infection after surgery is quite rare. But, if the surgery leads to an infection, it may require another treatment for prevention.
    • Tonsil abscesses: When tonsillitis is severe, pus can gather around your tonsils. Adults and adolescents are more likely to develop peritonsillar abscesses than children.

What is cost of Tonsillectomy in India?

The overall cost of tonsil surgery (tonsillectomy ) in India ranges from Rs. 40,000 to Rs. 60,000. However, some factors that affect the cost of tonsillectomy are:

    • Choice of treatment city and hospital
