About labiaplasty surgery

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure to reduce the size of the female labia (vaginal lips). The surgery can be performed on both inner and outer vaginal lips. The primary objective of the surgery is to repair damage to the labia caused by lifestyle, disease, or childbirth. The enlarged labia can cause discomfort during intercourse, sports activities, and while wearing tight clothes or undergarments. This surgery can be performed along with other female genital cosmetic or surgical procedures like vaginoplasty, or vaginal rejuvenation.

Labiaplasty is a clinic-based procedure performed under general or local anesthesia, as recommended by the gynecologist. The procedure shortens or reshapes the vaginal lips. The unwanted tissue is cut away and the loose edge is stitched up with dissolvable stitches. The whole procedure takes about one to two hours and is carried out under the influence of either general anesthesia or local anesthesia. The lips are joined with self-dissolvable sutures, which dissolve in 15-21 days. After the operation, patients are advised to always keep the area clean and apply the ointment regularly. The female has to maintain proper hygiene and wear loose-fitting clothes after surgery. Avoid using irritants or scented sprays or washes around the vaginal area.

Frequently Asked Questions

I am 45 years old with 2 kids. I wanted to beautify my labia. I wanted to know how long it takes to recover from a labiaplasty surgery.

It takes up to 4 days to recover post-procedure. It is advised to avoid any friction in the pubic region from intimacy or sports for at least 4-6 weeks post-operation.

Will labiaplasty surgery affect sensitivity in the vagina?

Well, with some surgical procedures, there can be some initial numbing in the area where the incisions are done. But this will fade over time and you will restore your sensitivity within a couple of days.

How to know if I have abnormal labia?

No labia is abnormal. Just as we are all different, so are our genitals, their shape, size, and structure. However, at times, inner or outer labia can enlarge unusually because of stress during pregnancy, childbirth, age, or hormonal fluctuations.

If you feel chafing, rashes, pain, and itching very regularly around your labia lips, or frequently experience swelling around your vulva, chances are that your labia has enlarged over time. In such a case, we suggest you consult a gynecologist immediately and discuss the best possible treatment after proper diagnosis.

Why do my labia keep growing?

There is no definite reason for the growth of labia. It could either be shaped a certain way right from birth (congenital reasons), happen because of genetics, or enlarge over time because of hormonal fluctuations during puberty, pregnancy, childbirth, lactation, or menopause. This is entirely normal, common, and treatable.

How to make labia smaller at home?

Unfortunately, no medicine, creams, ointment, or home remedy can help reduce the size of an enlarged labia. Labiaplasty surgery is the only proven way to reduce or reshape the enlarged labia lips.

Which doctor performs Labiaplasty- a gynecologist or a plastic surgeon?

Both gynecologists and plastic surgeons perform labiaplasty. However, an Ob-Gynecologist specifically trained and experienced in cosmetic gynecology is the most ideal choice.

What are the qualifications of a Labiaplasty doctor?

The certifications of a labiaplasty surgeon must include one/ more of the following qualifications:

  • MBBS
  • DGO
  • DNB/MS- General Surgery
  • MS-Gynecology
  • MS- Obstetrics
  • MS-Plastic Surgery
  • Masters Course in Cosmetic Gynecology (MCCG)
  • Diploma course in Cosmetic Gynecology (DCCG)
  • Fellowship in Cosmetic Gynecology (FCG)

What is the average consultation fee for a labiaplasty specialist in vijayawada?

An average consultation fee for a gynecologist/ plastic surgeon who can perform labiaplasty runs between INR 500-INR 1500 in vijayawada.

Is labiaplasty the same as vaginoplasty?

No. Labiaplasty is a surgery focussed only on the reshaping of the labial lips (labia minora or labia majora), while vaginoplasty is the surgery to reconstruct the entire vaginal site. Both are done for different reasons. While labiaplasty is done to ease the constant chafing, rashes, itching, and swelling on the enlarged labia, vaginoplasty helps tighten and rejuvenate the loosened vaginal walls and pelvic muscles.

Can labiaplasty and clitoris reconstruction be performed at the same time?

Yes, if need be, both labiaplasty and clitoris reconstruction surgery can be performed at the same time.

What is the best time to schedule labiaplasty surgery?

The best time to schedule labiaplasty surgery is 2-3 days after your current menstrual cycle.

How much time does a labiaplasty surgery take?

Labiaplasty is typically a less than 30-minute surgery. However, including your preparation, some basic tests, and anesthesia time, it may extend to 45-50 minutes.

Does labiaplasty leave any visible scars on the labia lips?

No. Cosmetic gynecologists ensure that the procedure doesn’t leave any visible scars on the labia lips. The incisions are made only in the natural folds of the vulva and are self dissolvable.

Can labiaplasty alter my ability for childbirth?

No. Labiaplasty does not alter your ability for childbirth. Labiaplasty is performed only on the outer vulvar region, while the reproductive organs such as the uterus, ovaries, or fallopian tubes lie way above it. Since none of either is invaded during the procedure, labiaplasty does not alter your reproductive abilities.

Why does it itch after labiaplasty?

Itching is a very natural part of healing. You might also feel a little swelling and itching in the initial two-three days after surgery. You are advised to use your ointment during this time and keep the area clean and dry. With time, medicines should mellow the discomfort and recovery shall complete.

However, if the itching persists, even after a week, please consult your gynecologist immediately. It could be a sign of a yeast or bacterial infection. It could also be an allergic reaction to a medication. In such a case, you would need added medications.

How long should I wait before having sex after labiaplasty?

Doctors advise you to wait for at least 5-6 weeks before resuming your sex life after labiaplasty suregry. Then, as you slowly heal, and feel well-rested, please see your gynecologist for one final clearance. Thereafter, you are free to resume as you like.

Are the results of labiaplasty permanent?

No. No surgery whether cosmetic or otherwise is permanent in nature. Our bodies change with age and that’s only natural.

However, yes, the labiaplasty results are generally long-term and depending on the type and method of surgery used, may sustain for more than 10-15 years.

Does insurance cover labiaplasty surgery?

No, labiaplasty is considered an elective cosmetic procedure, that is, a surgery you undergo out of ‘choice’ and not ‘medical necessity’. Therefore, it is not covered under insurance.

However, Pristyn Care provides you with multiple payment options to ease your medical expenses, including low-cost EMI. To know more, you can call us directly, and our experts will help guide you through the process.

How to prepare for Labiaplasty

A few things to follow before labiaplasty surgery are:

  • Choose the right doctor. While cosmetic vaginal surgeries can be done by both- gynecologists and plastic surgeons, it is best if you do a thorough read on your health, discomfort, needs, and expectations. Based on the same, choose a doctor that best suits your needs. Typically, an Ob-gynecologist trained in cosmetic gynecology is the safest choice Discuss your current health, medication, vitamin, and supplements thoroughly with your doctor. In case you are on blood thinners, your doctor would ask you to stop taking them a few days before surgery. They are known to increase the risk of excessive bleeding.
  • Doctors advise abstaining from sex for a month before the procedure.
  • Avoid eating or drinking anything post-midnight before the surgery. It helps avoid any complications related to anesthesia.
  • Take enough rest before the surgery so that the body is fully prepared for the procedure. Get at least 9 hours of sleep.
  • Do not shave the surgical site yourself. A simple cut could risk unwanted infection and septic.

What are the possible risks/ side effects of Labiaplasty?

Risks or side effects are extremely rare with advancements in medical sciences. In fact, laser labiaplasty reduces the risk of complications to less than 5%.

However, as with any surgery, your body takes some time to heal itself. Some of the possible side effects during this time include-

  • Mild bleeding
  • Infection
  • Hematoma
  • Temporary numbness
  • Chronic dryness
  • Decreased sensitivity around the vulva
  • Mild discomfort during sexual intercourse in the initial days of the recovery

All these side effects and risks are easily manageable with the Postoperative instructions prescribed by the doctor. However, if the itching, swelling or bleeding persists even after a week, please consult your gynecologist immediately. It could be a sign of a yeast or bacterial infection. It could also be an allergic reaction to a medication. In such a case, you would need added medications.

How to recover after Labiaplasty?

Doctors advise the following tips to quickly recover after labiaplasty:

  • Take complete bed rest for the first 24 hours.
  • If the site itches, swells, or pains, use ice packs to relieve the discomfort.
  • As you recover, do not wipe, only gently pat dry. Keep the surgical site free of moisture and dirt.
  • Start gentle walking after one day of operation. It would help with blood circulation.
  • Wear only loose-fitting cotton fabric clothes to ensure that the vaginal area is breathable, ensuring no germs are collected.
  • Do not use perfumed lotions, deodorants, soaps, or vaginal washes before six weeks from the surgery. Use only clear water and make sure you keep the vagina clean and moisture-free.
